A 5K, Fun Times and a Fabulous Fragrance

How has your week been?
Mine has actually been really great.

I ran my first 5K, in I really can't tell you how many years, but lets say more than 10 years ago.
Literally even a few years back when I was racing consistently it was only Marathons.

I hit up the packet pick up Friday. This was seriously bitter sweet I tell ya!
I loved the opportunity that I was given to participate in this race. (Thanks to Alaska Air for the Sponsorship!!!)
When I went up to the area with the different race sections for bib numbers. Having to pass the marathon runners bib station and not stop was tough. But I got over it (a little) and hit up that 5K table with a big smile.

On a side note, don't you just love those huge chandeliers? This packet pick up was at one of the historic buildings at the Utah State Fair park.

Race morning, last minute decision I grabbed what I call my sports bra/body corset. LOL Yeah, I haven't quite lost all the weight I want yet and it's basically one of those full upper body sports bras, and since mine is like several sizes too small I knew it would suck in all my extra stuff, and make me feel better about wearing a tighter race shirt. (Laugh, it's okay, because I do ha ha.)

I know, I know some people think not loving your body the way it is, is body shaming. Well frankly I don't care what people think.
I knew I would feel a little uncomfortable with the tightness around my upper body from having it all sucked in, but when I looked in the mirror and liked the results better it made me feel better about myself and that's more important for me!

When I walked out to my car and had to scrap the frost off my windows. I decided all the extra layers and including the tight corset, LOL. Was a good choice!

I cranked up seat warmers on high, and turned up the heater and headed out.
I took the drive up into Salt Lake City, and being a local gal (even though I rarely go up to SLC). I wasn't going to pay for parking unless I had no other choice. Drove around the block down the street a bit from the finish and Oh Yeah, found an awesome free parking spot. SCORE!

I got there a bit on the early side, so I just sat in my car and stayed warm until about 15 minutes til race start and then I walked the less than half mile to the start.

There were a lot of runners out there, that years back you probably wouldn't have ever seen getting into the fun of a 5K.

I'll tell ya, when your alone at a race. You are a BEACON for groups to grab because there must be some sign that says, single girl grab her to take our group photo, LOL.
I really don't mind, this used to happen to me a lot at marathons too.

Of course that was until one group that after I said yes, each person in the group hands me their individual phone to take the same picture with.  Seriously, in the age of text and send. They couldn't forward a picture onto each other?? Oh well, I grinned and did it anyway. Then walked into the corral so I could avoid additional amateur photo opps, LOL LOL

The race starting temp was 38 degrees, and when I finished it was still 38 degrees.

In other words absolutely PERFECT running temps! I bet the marathoners were absolutely loving the running conditions!
In case your wondering this event also hosts:
Full Marathon
Half Marathon
5K
10K Skate
26.2 Mile Bike Tour
Kids 1K

The 5K course, super easy basically close as you get to a flat course in Salt Lake.

The race was fun, and very well organized.
Gorgeous spring weather and surroundings, with beautiful snow capped mountain peaks around you, could you ask for a better race/day?

On a funny note: I was a little shocked at how many stop in a 5K just slightly more than a mile into the race to grab a drink and walk. But it was okay by me, I think I passed 100 people at that water stop and only counted 2 passing me a few minutes later.  BONUS!

Truthfully, I was running this purely for fun. I had no plans, other than to run the whole thing and have fun doing it. I also decided not to run with any music, so I could people watch and enjoy the crowds and conversation around me. After all, this is my first race of any kind in over 3 years since I got the work injury that damaged a few tendons in my left foot.

Because "runner" people watching is awesome!!!!!

On a side note, a father and his 4 year old and 6 year old running with him, passed me effortlessly, yeah and beat me. It just made me wish I had thought to bring a young niece to run with, LOL. Next time, I will do just that

I did pass a 92 year old, who called himself "one of the young guys out that day." He made me smile, and just love that some people are able to stay active into their 90's, that is just awesome!!!

On a 2nd side note, after noticing the finishing times in my age group for the 5K, I realized if I had been in marathon shape I could have easily placed or won my age group. Definitely something to consider for the future, and I who knows I just might run it again and try ya never know:)

I had a great time, and while some people enjoy a fastest ever PR, I had a different kind of PR, I had a "My worst Ever 5K time PR", LOL LOL
(Could I of run faster? Possibly, but I decided to use what I like to call my "I can run this pace forever", pace.)

Not even kidding about that, It was my absolute worst by far. But who really cares, I didn't!
I was out there having fun. I can't even tell you how entertaining it was to listen, watch others.

Not only that, but how motivational it was to hear some talk to their friends and push each other. Many of these 5K runners these days I noticed, this is their first race ever, or first time getting into running. Their reason's why are all different, it's an entirely different experience than running a marathon on so many different levels it's a world I have been away from for a very long time, too long!

Overall, I actually think I walked away from this opportunity with some valuable lesson's learned. One was, I was far more proud for total strangers who didn't even realize I was listening/people watching them. Than I was for anything I had done that day, and I really enjoyed that learning experience!

I even heard the best comment ever from one of the organizers on the speakers as I was leaving.

He said, even if your not out to try and win. We give you 26.2 miles of uninterrupted running, biking or 10K skating through salt lake with zero traffic stops, the only time you'll ever get that in the city.
I smiled because that is a great way to look at any race. Even if you aren't there to compete against anyone but yourself, you really should look at a race as a fun/great opportunity to run with no stoplight limitations, LOL

The Salt Lake City Marathon is a very well organized event.
The finishers area was huge and I tell ya like a runners buffet.

I grabbed a banana for a quick breakfast and a water. Skipped everything else, in my mind I couldn't help thinking about those middle and back of the pack marathon runners who would be coming through several hours later from when I was there.

While I am sure they had plenty, I decided one less 5K runner taking some would leave a bit more for one of the endurance runners who would enjoy it/need it more than me!

Although, I will say I was highly tempted by the freshly cooked pancakes hot off the grill, LOL But those would have put me way over my calorie intake for the day, ha ha.

(They gave nice looking shirts out for the 5K didn't they!)

When I finished I stayed long enough to see the first place half cross the finish. Would have enjoyed staying to see the marathon runners finish, but I didn't want to wait in the cold and knowing me it would just make me bummed I couldn't be one of them.

Back when I used to do 5K's you never saw finisher medals unless you won, or you were a kid. I don't know why but I still think its odd they give them in every race now.

I know, I know I am from a different street race era I guess I gotta get with the times. LOL
Not sure if I will keep it or just donate it to one of those charities that use them at Special Needs sporting events.

REST OF THE WEEK

My running improved this week, still not where it should be now nearly 2 months in. But I decided to bump things up a bit a few days, and my body responded nicely and actually liked it better than the easier mileage I had been doing in previous weeks. Oddly the extra miles run together didn't even bring any soreness. (Which was kinda a bummer, LOL.)

On the plus side, we are into spring here. Which means snow one day, rain rain and more rain other days with the occasional pop of sunlight on other days. Even the ducks think it's spring, as I saw my first group of ducklings on a run this week. One of my tree's that I call the purple one is in bloom too and thanks to all the rain and snow this week, everything looks so fresh and green, love it!

What else have I been enjoying this week?
Well I participate in the Influenster program, and each month lately I've really been enjoying all the fun new products they send for me to try.

This month I am really enjoying this Ralph Lauren "Tender Romance" fragrance.
The best part about it, it's not just a trial sample they sent, it was a small bottle so it's going to last a while.  Which is awesome because I love the scent!

So that is a little bit about my week.

Have you run a fun race recently?
Are you like me, do you enjoy taking it all in and get a little more enjoyment of listening and watching others, than from your own accomplishments too?

Today, I am linking up with HoHo Runs and MissSippiPiddlin today for their Weekly Wrap! If you have a post to link up, and time to participate and visit a few others in the link up, you should totally come link up with them too!

Let me introduce Denise - Today's Runner Spotlight

Today is Spotlight Thursday
Each Thursday I spotlight a different runner from around the world.

This week I'd like to introduce Denise.
I asked Denise, to tell part of her story and introduce you all to her.  So sit back and enjoy and gain some inspiration!

Denise Blogs At:
Tell us what distances you like to run?

5k and 13.1 are my favorites.

How long have you been running?  Or when did you start running?

I started running with my school's running club in 5th grade. I stopped and started a bunch of times and wish I had stuck with it. I've been running consistently since 2011 when I began training for my first half marathon.

What has been your favorite race and distance you have ever run?  Tell us why?

My favorite race was the 2013 runDisney Tinker Bell Half Marathon at Disneyland. It was my big goal race for a few reasons. I still had about 65 pounds to lose (out of 110 total) after being on restricted activity and bed rest during my pregnancy with my son. I wanted to lose the rest of the weight before the race and achieve the goal of running a Half. I did it!!!

If you could run any race in the entire world, where would it be and why would you pick it?

The Dopey Challenge during the runDisney Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. I ran the Wine and Dine Half there last November and have had it in the back of my mind for a long time that I wanted to do the Marathon too.  I'm hoping to get in for 2015.

Do you enjoy running in the spring, summer, fall or winter the best?

Since I live in the rainy Pacific Northwest, I enjoy running in the summer the best to enjoy drier streets and warm breezes.

Have you experienced any trials/injuries/health issues that you have had to overcome?  Tell us about them.

I've had two overuse injuries that sidelines me for 2 months each. The first was my right hip, diagnosed as hip bursitis and the second was severe back pain. My hip is fully recovered but my back still aches sometimes. I learned through the process to listen to my body about when to back off and when it's okay to train hard.

Tell me what goes through your mind when you cross a finish line?

Total relief that the training worked and I actually did it!

Do you have a specific distance and PR that you are proud of?  Tell us about it.

I'm proud of my finish at the Newport Marathon last year. It was my first marathon and a really tough race for me. Around mile 17-18 I started feeling really loopy and in pain. My feet were killing me, my body ached, and it was all I could do to put one foot in front of the other. The sheer determination of finishing and getting that medal was what pushed me.

What is your favorite kind of running, solo running or running with a friend or group?

I have done races with friends but I'm more of a solo runner. It's my time to just be me, crank up my music, and run my heart out.

Do you listen to music while you run?  Give us the top 2 running songs on your playlist.

Yes, I love music! My favorite band to listen to is the Foo Fighters - they have been on every run with me since I started running again. My two favorite songs to run to are All My Life and The Pretender.

What is your must have running gadget, or item?

My shoes! I wear Mizuno Wave Inspire 9's and they are supportive enough to correct my overpronation but still lightweight.

Do you have any tips of suggestions for someone who is thinking of starting up running?

Find a good training plan that you like. I really liked Jeff Galloway's run/walk/run training.

Any goals you are currently working on, that you'd like to share?

I'm training for 2 half marathons in May to qualify for Half Fanatics. As a PNW runner, I've known about them for a while and this is the first opportunity I've had to really go for it.

You've had an incredible weight loss journey, and much success, what tips do you have for someone who is trying to get the drive to start their own weight loss journey?

Start with small changes and do them consistently. I believed for a long time that I would never lose weight or worse, continue gaining. It took walking a little more each day and eating a little smaller portion every meal for me to start to see real changes. I had a bunch of setbacks - times where I turned to food for comfort instead of talking to a friend and would see the numbers on the scale rise again. One day it just clicked for me that I didn't want to live that way any more and I never looked back. I've maintained a healthy weight for over 2 years now.

If you are a race ambassador, give a shout out to whom you represent.

I am honored to be a race ambassador for the 2014 See Jane Run Seattle Women's Half Marathon and 5k.

Runner Spotlight - Let Me Introduce Colleen

Today is Spotlight Thursday

This week I'd like to introduce Colleen.
I asked Colleen several questions, to tell part of her story and introduce you all to her

Life Free and Run

What distances do you like to run?

I have run everything from 5k to 26.2.  Half marathons are my favorite to run, but the feeling at the finish line of a 26.2 is my favorite!
5k is my least favorite because it's so painful...it's a full out sprint for 3 miles!

How long have you been running?

I ran high school cross country, but really got back into running after having my daughter.  We were gifted a BOB and long walks turned into walk/run combos and I was determined to do a 5k, so I used the Couch to 5k app.  I reviewed it on my blog because I really wanted to share it with everyone.  I credit for my success!

What has been your favorite race and distance you have ever run?  Tell us why?

It would be a tie between Nike Women's Half Marathon DC and Marine Corps Marathon but for completely different reasons.  For Nike I loved the motivation and Girl Power aspect of it and MCM was just so emotional paying homage to Marines who have been wounded or killed in service.  I cried while running that race!

If you could run any race in the entire world, where would it be and why would you pick it?

The Kaui Marathon!  I absolutely love that island.

Do you enjoy running in the spring, summer, fall or winter the best?

Fall for sure.  The temps are great and the air is dry.  The leaves are gorgeous!

Have you experienced any trials/injuries/health issues that you have had to overcome?  Tell us about them.

I had a severe strain in my quad.  It was originally thought to be a stress fracture.  It was hard.  I couldn't run for three months.  I had so much fear in my head that I would lose everything I had worked so hard for and have to started at ground zero again.  Luckily, it came back quickly!

Tell me what goes through your mind when you cross a finish line?

"I am on top of the world!  I can do anything right now!"

Do you have a specific distance and PR that you are proud of?  Tell us about it.

Running two fulls in 2013!  I never thought I could even run one!

Do you have a funny running story to share?  Or funny experience while running?

On the course of the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler in DC there was a couple dressed as Ketchup and Mustard cheering on runners with a sign that said, "Runners are beating you, Go Catch Up!"....I yelled to them, "I get it!" and the Mustard yelled back, "Relish the moment!".  I ran a few hundred yards before it really sunk in and I giggled....I got that one a bit late!

You run as a family, do you find this brings you closer together?

Absolutely.  I love runs with my family.

What is your favorite kind of running, solo running or running with a friend or group?

I like to mix it up.  Usually just me and my tunes, but occasionally I like to run with a friend and chat.

Do you listen to music while you run?  Give us the top 2 running songs on your playlist.

"Lucky Strike" by Maroon 5 and "Can't Hold Us" Mackelmore

What is your must have running gadget, or item?

I love my Garmin 210.  So easy to start and start for stoplights, etc.

In your spare time What other hobbies or sports do you love do?

I am a mom, wife,  kindergarten teacher, spin instructor, blogger and health/nutrition is a huge hobby of mine!

Do you have any tips of suggestions for someone who is thinking of starting up running?

Start small and do it for you.  Don't compare yourself to someone else....comparison is the thief of joy.

What are a few of your dreams or bucket list items?

I will definitely run another full marathon and I have added a triathlon to my race schedule.  That scares me!  Especially as someone who isn't a fan of getting their hair wet!

If you are a race ambassador, give a shout-out to those you represent?

I am a race ambassador for Zooma Half Marathon series.  I am very excited because I really like women's only races.  I feel like the playing field is evened and they offer so many great things pre and post race!

Runners Spotlight, Let Me Introduce Nick

Today is Spotlight Thursday

This week I'd like to introduce Nick.
I asked Nick several questions, to tell part of his story and introduce you all to him.

Nick Blogs at
What distances you like to run?

So far, in my training runs I am most comfortable with five miles; for races, I would vote 10K...5K just barely gets me warmed up :)

How long have you been running?  Or at what age did you start running?

I started running New Year's Eve 2012, so right at 10 months now...and just before I turned 45.
What made you want to become a runner?  What is it that keeps you at it?

I was a lifetime cigarette smoker, over 30 years, and always told myself that when I quit, I would spend a year training, and then run a marathon to celebrate a year of freedom...and that is still always in the back of my mind, at least until I get past the first one!

What is the furthest distance or race you have ever run?

My longest race is the half-marathon, done that twice; longest run is 15 miles, done once with another coming up this weekend.

What has been your favorite race and distance you have run?  Tell us why?

Favorite race is still South Padre Half-Marathon, for several reasons: first vacation with my wife after she finished cancer treatment; longest run to date at that time; raced on the beach - I love the ocean!; first time to place in my age group (1st place at that); first inaugural race, I love the idea of helping to promote running in a "new" locale.

If you could run any race in the entire world, where would it be and why?

Of course, everyone wants to run Boston, because BOSTON...but I think it would be great to run the Maui Marathon - who wouldn't want to run in paradise?

Do you run for fun?  Or run to compete?  Both?

I run for the love of it, but I am a competitive person by nature, so I enjoy racing against myself, my past performances; and I would be lying if I didn't admit I get a thrill when I pass another runner in a race!

Have you ever won a race or placed in your age group?

Yes, see #5 above - sad that it was a tiny race (only 88 finishers total), with no AG medals or special swag, and the most generic finisher's medal I have ever seen...but if they do it again, I will go back!

Have you experienced any trials/injuries/health issues that you have had to overcome?  Tell us about them.

I thought the smoking would really hold me back, but my wind seemed to return fairly quickly. I did injure myself by adding mileage too quickly before my first half - I went from 10 miles/wk to 30, within less than a month, on my own homemade training plan I also made a spontaneous decision to run barefoot on the sand...felt great until 10 miles then the ankles really began to throb. Took me out of serious running for about two months, and still gives me problems at times. Learned a lot about recovery, and listening to your body! And my ongoing issue is my weight - but not like many others; I am very thin,130 lbs at 5'-10", and cannot seem to gain no matter what I do...I have a metabolic rate that shames hummingbirds. This has me really concerned about whether I will be able to last the whole 26.2, because I don't know if I can actually carry enough calories, or eat enough along the way...but that is not going to stop my from trying!

Tell me what crossing the finish line feels like to you.

The finish line - WOOO! I am mixed when I cross the line - one part "Yay! I'm done!", one part "Aww, I'm done!"; one part "I'm never doing this again!", and one part "How soon is the next one!" I want to see my results, but at the same time I don't care...because I already know if I did my best or not; the clock is not the whole story.

Do you have a specific distance and PR that you are proud of?  Tell me about it.

See #5 above. (With a short career, this is an easy question to answer!)

Have you ever ran a race in costume?  Would you?

No, but I might, for Halloween or a zombie run, or something fun like that.

Do you have a funny running story to share?  Or what is the craziest thing that has ever happened to you while out on a run?

Getting attacked by a pit bull while on a training run - and winning! I own a pit, so they don't scare me...I waited until she got close, turned around suddenly, grabbed one of her ears and slapped her across the other side of her head; she was so surprised she fell down trying to turn and run! The snort of shock was priceless, I laughed for the next five minutes...but I kept running, too!

When someone asks you why you run, what do you tell them?

I point at my physique, and ask them, "Look at me, what else could I do?"

Do you hope to be a lifelong runner?

Oh, yeah, I am hooked through the gills :) I cannot imagine going back to the lifestyle I lived before.

What is your dream or biggest goals?

I just updated my goals, beyond "run a marathon"; now the list includes earning a Spartan Race Trifecta (finishing all three levels within a race year) and becoming a Certified Half-Maniac (by running 10 half's in 12 months).

What states/Countries have you run races in?  Share a few or your favorites?

All my racing has occurred in Texas, all but one in Houston.

What is your favorite kind of running, solo running or running with a friend or group?

I belong to a running club, but I generally prefer to run alone.

Have you ever run a relay race?

Not yet; I signed up for one with the club, but my team got scratched because they didn't all show up for the meet :(

Do you listen to music while you run?  Give me the top 2 running songs on your playlist.

Almost always - current faves are "Royals" by Lorde, and "Guerrilla Radio" by RATM.

Do you cross train?  What types?

Not enough, but when I do it is weight training, both free weight and machines; this will increase when      I get past the marathon and crank up more CrossFit, to prep for Spartan races.

When your not out on a run, What other hobbies/sports do you do?

I spend a lot of time reading and writing - both for my running blog, my (sadly neglected) Christian blog, and the book I am slowly writing - a study guide to the Gospel of John, aimed at those with little to no previous knowledge of Scripture.

What type of things motivate you and push you towards success?

I am motivated by my own progress, by stories of others who have overcome greater obstacles than mine and achieved awesomeness; and by the feedback i receive from those who care about me, like my wife and kids, my friends, and my Internet running community.

What is your must have running accessory?

The right shoes is obvious; I prefer a GPS, currently using Nike+ on my phone, and I prefer music, also on my phone - but I can go "naked", and sometimes I do!

Favorite pre and post run food?

Pre-run is oatmeal with honey and PB, sometimes adding a banana; post-run is a protein shake, followed by ALL THE FOOD - don't really care what, but I do enjoy breakfast foods: a 3-egg omelet with avocado and tomato, bacon, hash browns, and a waffle is a good bet!

Water or Sports drink?

Both - I carry Nuun electrolyte (love the caffeinated cherry-limeade) on training runs, most sports drinks have way too much sugar, and I try to drink 70 oz. of water per day - I read that "half your body weight" is a good rule of thumb, better than an arbitrary number.

What do you do with your race t-shirts and medals?

I wear the t-shirts as casual wear - gives me an excuse to talk running! The medals are in a box, until I get around to making a display - I can build as nice as I can buy, and it will be all ME!

Tell us something unique about you.

Twice a year, I spend one week inside a maximum security prison on Central Texas, doing evangelism retreats with the inmates - and some of those men are now my best friends and greatest Christian brothers.

What are your tips to someone who is looking to start running?

Focus more on spending time on your feet than pace or distance - I used a free Couch-to-5K app, and it really helped get me started and build my self-confidence, and learning what my body could do.
