Runner Spotlight, Let Me Introduce Jane

Thursday's I like to spotlight a different runner from around the world.
Today I'd like to introduce you all to
JANE

Tell me what first got you interested in running?

For a really long time I really wanted to ‘become a runner’. I know that sounds strange, but its true. I’d see people running, read race recaps on blogs, and think about how much I bet I’d like running. I just really wanted to be a runner. The only problem was I didn’t really know how to get past the first mile. So after several failed attempts at Couch-to-5K programs, I decided that I needed to something else, so I signed up in the Spring of 2012 to run the Nike Women’s Half Marathon with Team in Training. Team in Training helped me realize pretty quickly that I was in fact not going to die if I attempted to run more than one mile at a time, and got me through my first 13.1 finish line. Since then I have run a whole lot of other races, and in October of 2013, I officially became a marathoner when I ran the Nike Women’s Full Marathon.

How long have you been running?

Since April/May of 2012. So just over 2 years!

What distances do you like to run?

I prefer longer runs, I’d say 8 miles plus. I love getting to the halfway point and knowing no matter what you are finishing that run, and you are going to feel great.

Do you run races? Which types?

Yes, all types of races! I’ve done fun runs, like the Color Run, and Bay to Breakers in San Francisco, and, a handful of 5 and 10Ks, five halfs and one full marathon!

Do you have a favorite race ever?  Tell us why it is so memorable to you.

The Nike Woman’s Marathon will always be my favorite race. It was not only my first half and full marathon, and runs through the city that I began running in, the race also benefits The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). I ran Nike the first time for myself, to become a runner, but the second time around I ran it for my Dad. A year after I began training with Team in Training and fundraising for LLS, I found out my dad had been diagnosed with Leukemia. Don’t worry, he is doing very well at the moment, but I hope to run a race every year to benefit LLS in honor of him and in honor of my running. They gave me running through Team in Training and I am able to give back to my dad and everyone else that suffers from blood cancers.
If you’d like to support my fundraising efforts this year, you can donate to through my Team in Training page here: http://pages.teamintraining.org/vtnt/chicago14/janepfrank

What goes through your mind as you cross the finish line?

Utter relief. Every race, no matter the distance, I cross that finish line and think, ‘Thank the lord that is over!’ Not because it was arduous, but because I am so proud of myself for finishing and so happy that I can call myself a runner one more day. (Okay, and because I get to stop, talk off my running shoes, and drink chocolate milk. I admit it!)

If you could run any race in the entire world, which one would you pick?

I really want to run the New York City Marathon. Not just because it’s an amazing race, in an amazing city, but because for the entire 26.2 miles I know I’d be thinking of my grandmother who lived in New York City until the day she passed. 26.2 miles of smiles because I’d see different sites and think of the amazing things she did in her life. Now that sounds like an awesome marathon.

Do you have any pre-race rituals or superstitions you follow?

I have to eat the same thing before any race or long run: toast, peanut butter, and banana. I know that is the norm for a lot of runners, but if I don’t eat it, I will fake myself out with stomach pains that probably do not exist.

What are some of your future running goals or plans?

I am really gunning for a big PR at the Chicago Marathon this Fall. I am hoping to cut over 30 minutes off my time, and I think with a lot of training and a little luck I will be able to do it. I also want to start trail running more and maybe even run an Ultra after Chicago!

Do you have a funny running related story to share?  Or something that happened to you while out on a run that made you laugh?

The best thing that ever happened to me running was I was on a solo run, which are not my favorite, and this guy running towards puts his hand in the air and yells, “HIGH FIVE!” I stuck up my hand, received maybe one of the greatest high fives of my life and we both kept running. I laughed for a good 5 minutes because it was just the best thing ever. Why don’t we all do that?

Do you enjoy group or solo running?

I LOVE group running! If I am in a group I am automatically having more fun and challenging myself more. I run solo when I have to, but I prefer my fellow runners striding next to me.

Favorite terrains to run? flat, hills, trails, track or treadmill?

I like rolling hills the best. Working to get up and then finding that relief on the way down. I love that it makes your body work in every way possible, but lets you find a solid pace that you can keep up with the entire run.

Do you listen to music when you run?  If so what are your top two favorites that help you motivate yourself to push harder?

Sometimes but not always. But when I do, it’s an eclectic mix. Eye of the Tiger is a staple on my iPod, and I love running to Katy Perry’s counter part Roar. Both just get me excited. Cliché, but true.

What other sports or hobbies do you enjoy doing?

I love eating, cooking, and traveling, and now that I am living in Colorado I try to hike and ski as much as possible.

What are some of your life’s bucket list items?

I really just want to travel everywhere. I have quite a few countries marked off my list, but there are so many more!

Tell me something unique about you?

I like to joke around and call myself a gypsy. In the last 5 years I’ve made 4 major moves: Monterey to LA, LA to DC , DC to San Francisco, and last but not least, San Francisco to Denver where I’m currently living. I may be addicted, as more than one person has mentioned that possibility, but I think it’s just that I go where life takes me, and right now life has put me in Denver.

Today's Runner Spotlight

Thursdays I enjoy spotlighting
different runners from around the world.

Today I'd like to introduce you all to Noel.

Tell me what first got you interested in running?

I started running at an early age (12) and was instantly drawn to the sport. I liked team sports like soccer but there was something about being alone on a run and being only responsible to me that I liked. I have always liked running fast and pushing my limits. I like the time alone on runs as well to be alone with my thoughts. I went from running laps around the house with my father’s Timex watch to running 5k and 10k races as a youngster.

How long have you been running?

I have been running since the age of 12 and will be 39 in October so it makes it very close to 27 years of running for me.

What distances do you like to run?

Because I started running at a relatively young age I have run everything from the 100m hurdles to a 100km ultramarathon. I learned early on that I had a talent for the middle and longer distances. In high school and university age I focused on the 800m and 1500m events but was always running local road races as well. As time has ticked on I have tried longer and longer races. I qualified for Boston on my first marathon and a few years back tried some races beyond the marathon distance.

You run races. Which types?

Love to run and train but find races more difficult but still do them. Don’t have the same speed as a when I was really skinny and fearless but still like speed so will dabble in track races, 5ks BUT still foolish enough to train and tackle marathons and ultras!

Do you have a favorite race ever?  Tell us why it is so memorable to you.

My favourite race experiences have so far been ultramarathons. I can’t say I enjoyed all of each race but there was something spiritual and moving about each experience. My last two were quite memorable. One of the two was a solo run across the Grand Canyon and the other a spring time trail ultramarathon in Tuscany Itlay.

What goes through your mind as you cross the finish line?

What goes through my mind usually depends on the race and level of exertion, but it is generally a feeling of relief and accomplishment that I feel. I can train like a crazy man, but for me the hardest challenge is the unique mental challenge and stress of a race.

If you could run any race in the entire world, which one would you pick?

Too many to choose from….like Comrades ultra in South Africa, marathons in the United States, Europe and beyond. I love races with scenery, history and neat stories.

Have you run marathons in different countries?  Which ones?

Canadian runner:
·         Boston marathon
·         Solo run of Grand Canyon
·         Italy 100km trail ultra
·         Northern Ireland 100km trail ultra
·         Bermuda half-marathon

Do you have a PR you are proud of that you would love to share?

800m 2:03, 1500m 4:20, 5k 16:30, 10K 35:18 marathon 2:54

Do you have any pre-race rituals or superstitions you follow?

No real pre-race superstitions but like to have a good haircut shortly before and have everything laid  out and ready the night before.

What are some of your future running goals or plans?

Hoping to run well at the 2014 Toronto marathon and would love to run some personal bests before I become a master in 2015! Other than running I am always looking to share other runner’s stories and looking to have new adventures.

Do you have a funny running related story to share?  Or something that happened to you while out on a run that made you laugh?

I have lost a t-shirt and a nice winter tuque because of intestinal discomfort (short version) that are probably my weirdest, grossest and most entertaining tales to tell- but often not for the faint of stomach J

What is the funniest/craziest non-runner question you get from people who don’t understand why you run?
Do you enjoy group or solo running?

Love being alone out on a run or with a small group, I am not a big fan of huge group runs but have done a few now and again. Sometimes its nice to have company!

Favorite terrains to run? flat, hills, trails, track or treadmill?

Have run on track, trail, treadmill and road but must admit I love the serenity and peace of a nice calm run on the trails!

Do you listen to music when you run?  If so what are your top two favorites that help you motivate yourself to push harder?

I generally do not listen to music on a run and especially not on  a trail run but during long runs 25-100km I will occasionally put on CBC radio (news and radio shows) to keep me company. When I was younger I used to run with a “walkman” but gave it up quickly as it was annoying and when I do occasionally listen to music I do sometimes like the music and it can make me go faster, but more often like the quite of my thoughts.

What other sports or hobbies do you enjoy doing?

I also cycle, cross-country ski, hike and walk (have actually walked 100km)…and write!

What are some of your life’s bucket list items?

The bucket list is always changing but can include: skydive, Kilamanjero, Comrades marathon, Ultra Mont Blanc, Death Race in Canada (Ultra), write a book on running etc.

Tell me something unique about you?

Not sure there is anything extraordinarily unique about me but in small circles I am always the “runner”.

What is your favorite running book?

Once a runner.

Let Me Introduce Lauren Today's Runner Spotlight

Today is Spotlight Thursday
Each Thursday I spotlight a different runner from around the world.

This week I'd like to introduce Lauren.
I asked Lauren, to tell part of her story and introduce you all to her.  So sit back and enjoy and gain some inspiration!

Tell me what first got you interested in running?

It was a long process that led me to running. I lived in Australia for 6 months in 2010 and gained about 30-35 pounds in that time span. It was easy to ignore whilst having fun adventures in a new country, but when I came home at Christmas that year, I realized how much I really gained. I half-heartedly tried losing that added weight throughout 2011, but was not successful. Then, in November 2011, my husband and I got engaged at Walt Disney World, thus sparking a huge desire to start exercising. I REALLY wanted to look and feel beautiful on our wedding day! So in January 2012 I started running to jump start my weight loss. Eventually strength training and diet came into play as well. Running really stuck with me though, and then that spring I discovered that Disney held races where you could run through the parks! Without a second thought I decided that the 2013 Disney Princess Half Marathon would be my first long distance race and the desire to run for something bigger than just weight loss was born. Since then, I have become very passionate about running and the effort it takes to achieve my goals!

How long have you been running?

I have been running for over 2 years now, since January 2012. I hope to be able to run until my last day here on earth.

What distances do you like to run?  Which is your favorite distance to run?

Every distance has its perks. So far though, my favorite distance is the half marathon. Training does not take so much time out of my schedule like training for a full marathon, and that feeling of accomplishment and runners’ high is still amazing!

Do you run races? Which types?

I love to race (the clock that is)! I have done races of the 5K distance all the way to the full marathon distance, and have also done a sprint triathlon. I love them all, and would really like to do more of everything, even a half ironman someday!

If you run races, do you have a favorite race ever?  Tell us why it is so memorable to you.

This is a big toss-up between the Disney Princess Half Marathon and the Woodlands Marathon (my first 26.2). If I had to choose, then the Princess Half would win – it was my first half marathon and runDisney race! There is NOTHING like running through Cinderella’s castle and crossing the finish line while at the most magical place on earth!
Image
You love Disney.  Tell us who is your favorite princess?

Another tough question to just pick one! I really love Rapunzel and Tiana because I relate them the most. Rapunzel represents my adventurist side and love for travel, while Tiana represents my intense drive and desire to work hard to accomplish my goals in life!

On your blog you talk about a pair of running shoes that changed your life forever.  Tell us a little bit more about that.

I bought my first pair of real running shoes in January 2011. The first time I ran in them I could not go a mile without being out of breath. Each day I ran I just had to tell myself I was still getting stronger. They were the tangible key to an improved life – because of those shoes, I am a happier, healthier me. I like to think of them as an analogy to Cinderella’s glass slipper. When the Fairy Godmother gave her those shoes, she had no idea that they would change her life so drastically, and neither did I when I bought my first pair.

Have you ever raced in costume?  Would you?

Absolutely!! Every single Disney race I will ALWAYS be in costume! So far I have run in a Tiara (Rapunzel costume), inflatable wings (Buzz Lightyear costume), and even a wig (Merida costume)!

Image
What goes through your mind as you cross the finish line?

The moment I cross is always pride immediately followed by humility. I am SO proud of myself for the feat I have just accomplished, but I am always grateful that I am able to do this because I know not everyone can!

Image
If you could run any race in the entire world, which one would you pick?

Hardest.Question.Ever. I am really looking forward to crossing a couple bucket list races off the list next year, such as the Dopey Challenge and the Big Sur Marathon. I am also very passionate about our U.S. military and would love to support them by participating in the Marine Corps Marathon and Army Marathon (I did get to run the Wounded Warrior Half Marathon in 2013 which was incredible). For adventure running, I would love to do the original Marathon in Greece, and the Great Wall Marathon in China. Last but definitely not least, the iconic Boston Marathon!

What are some of your running goals or plans?
After my knee heals, I want to get a sub-2 hour half marathon, cross the finish line of the Dopey Challenge (no time goals whatsoever), then maybe snag a full marathon PR at Big Sur next year! I would also like to complete a Half Ironman by the time I turn 30!

Do you have a funny running story to share?

The funniest thing I have seen so far is from last year’s sprint triathlon. While the race officials were making announcements, a golden retriever jumped in the pool and swam around for a minute before his owner helped pull him out of the pool. It was hilarious, and everyone was snickering!

Image

What is your favorite running gadget, or must have running item?

My ASICS shoes and Experia Thorlo socks! They are a magical shoe/sock combo because I have never had a blister or lost a toe nail *knock on wood*. I also need to run with a Bondi Band (headband) because I sweat a lot and it keeps all the sweat out of my eyes!

Do you enjoy group or solo running?

Both. Most of the time I do solo running, which I love because I can really clear my mind and figure things out! However, when I was training for my full marathon I really cherished the Saturday’s where I had company for my long run. Logging that much time on that running path every week made me happy to have someone to talk with!

Favorite time of year you like to run?

In Texas I really don’t mind running year round. During the summer I don’t run crazy distances or anything because it does get so hot and humid, but honestly, it is rare a day that shows up that isn’t good for running!

Favorite terrains to run; flat, hills, trails?

Can I be boring and say I really enjoy flat terrain? However, hills do make me stronger – not down hills though. I hate down hills…they caused my current case of runners’ knee.

Do you listen to music while you run?  If so what are your top two favorites that help you motivate yourself to push harder?

I used to listen to music more often than I do now. Now I prefer running sans music because I like going through all my thoughts and emotions with each step. It makes me a better and stronger runner! However, the big two songs that help push me are “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins, and “Go the Distance” from Disney’s Hercules.

What type of hobbies/sports do you enjoy besides running?

I love to sing! It has always been a huge part of my life – my brother and I recently recorded an acoustic cover of the song “Let it Go” from Disney’s Frozen!

You’re an adventure seeker.  You love to try thrilling things like skydiving and scuba etc.  What’s been your favorite crazy, yet incredible experiences so far?

I am always up for an adrenaline rush! So far, my favorite thrilling adventure I have done is skydiving. There is nothing like it…you can’t replicate that kind of nervousness and excitement in anything else!

What are some of your life’s bucket list items?

I want to travel, and run races, around the world with my husband. I want to be happy and continue to grow in my career, wherever it may take me. I want to nurture all my greatest relationships and keep them for my whole life – my family and friends mean more to me than anything. I want to do my part in speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves and save as many animal lives as I can.

You are also a blogger, what is your favorite thing about blogging?

It is without a doubt the sense of community. Everyone is so encouraging and supportive, and they give me a sense of accountability for which I am very grateful! I am so fortunate to have been able to meet many of my blogging friends in person, and look forward to meeting more of y’all later this year!

What types of things motivate you and push you toward success?

I have a very internal drive and motivation, and honestly I always have. If there is something that I want more than anything else, I will NOT stop until I accomplish it. Period.

Tell me something unique about you?

My nickname growing up was always Tigger due of my optimism and high levels of energy!

Are you involved in any charities, or sponsor/ambassador programs that you’d like to give a shout-out to?
I am actually a sales representative for Bondi Bands. They are a fantastic company that creates various fitness products, such as sweat wicking headbands and hats (with super cute sayings!), compression socks, and arm bands that hold your phone/keys/ID while you run!
I am also actively involved with Team Red White & Blue (RWB) Houston Chapter. They are an amazing organization that helps to improve the lives of veterans who are transitioning back to civilian life!
