Books, Zombies and a Great Week

Hope you all had a wonderful past week!
While I still ended up taking it pretty easy, I did get up and around much more than last week.

I finished the drug treatment, and the good news is, it has lessened the pain in my lower back considerably and almost all the swelling has gone down. I think I even lost an inch off my waist just from the reduced swelling, LOL I'll take it!

I am starting to get used to what "manageable" levels of pain are. I'm to young to be on drugs and pain killers daily, so going forward I will only be taking them as needed during really bad times.

I'm also adjusting my mental game.
If I believe I will be in pain, I likely will. But if I believe the pain is leaving, or not that bad, then it won't be. I know not every day will play that way, but I really am trying to adjust my thoughts to the positive, because I think that will help the most!

I taught the community beginning blogging class on Wednesday, and I have to say I think it went pretty good. There was double the turnout that I thought there would be. Those who attended seemed to enjoy it, they asked a lot of questions and a few told me it was very beneficial for them.
Several asked if I would be doing another, and a few more contacted the library when they couldn't attend to see if I would come back to do more. Not sure if more will happen yet, but I am glad it was enjoyed!

I didn't get quite as much reading in this week as I did the previous week.  But enjoyed tackling 3 books that have been on my "to read" list for quite a while.

Defy by Sara B Larson -This is one of those girl power type fantasy's where the heroine has to hide her true identity, so she can save the Hero. I really liked it!

Perfected by Kate Jarvik Birch - This one really surprised me, definitely not what I was expecting. It's future world in America where rich politicians pass laws where it is okay to breed the perfect human clones. Young girls, with talents who are then sold as pets to entertain the rich. I wanted to re-write a few parts of it, but over all I enjoyed it!

Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins - I think Kaiden, the male character in the book might have just nailed my 4th place spot for best book boyfriend. Yup, pretty sure he did! But I am a sucker for the perfect bad boy. If you like a little Heaven and Hell mixed together with a little romance that keeps you guessing the entire way through, ya this is it. I could hardly put it down. I can't wait to get my hands on book 2.

FYI, if you're wonder who make my top 3 lists of best book boyfriends. Prince Maxon from The Selection Series - Noah Shaw from The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer -  Bishop Lattimer from The Book of Ivy

It's actually been a beautiful week, we got a bit more snow several days this past week. I know this isn't the best shot, because I took it as I was leaving my neighborhood from inside the car and the football stadium lights are in the way. But I really am lucky to be surrounded by so many beautiful mountain peaks! When I do go out for a run, this is my 5 mile loop, when I run up to the base of these mountains and back.
I'll have to remember to take a picture on the next clear sunset day we have.  The mountains around me turn a beautiful pink in the evenings, it's quite stunning actually!

I took one of my nieces and two of my nephews out for a date night, and we went and saw the Peanuts movie. I bought a large popcorn and my 3 year old nephew pounded that down like no other, I kept looking at him wondering where he was putting it all. I think he ate over half of it on his own, LOL But ya know, you go to the movies you gotta have popcorn right!

I took myself to the new Pride and Prejudice and Zombies movie.
Don't laugh, well okay you can laugh. I actually really enjoyed the movie. Ya, it was Elizabeth and her sisters kicking some serious zombie butt, they definitely aren't the weak girls that need saving. But then you've got Mr. Darcy who of course dismisses her until he witness her impressive fighting skills. The zombies are a different than most zombies, they are actually sophisticated and intelligent enough to know what is going on. But ya, they are pretty gross. So ya, you've got those two worlds mixed, and it's lovely, gross and funny at the same time. So yup, I enjoyed a little movie morning out by myself on Friday!

That was my week. I am still itching to get out and be more active. This week, if the snow holds back, I plan on a little running daily outdoors.
I have an opportunity to go snowboarding in a few weeks, I haven't been in so many years. I am not sure if it is the wisest thing to do with my back right now, but then again if I don't fall, I would probably be fine. Of course, I've put on a little weight, so I am not even sure if my boarding snow pants will even still fit, if they don't that may be the deciding factor, LOL But ya, I am just itching to get out for a little snow adventure, if you can't tell!

I want to welcome any of the Grow Your Blog Participants, who are visiting my blog and reading a post for their first time. Looking forward to getting to know many of you better!

How Your Library Can Help You on Your Next Run

Sounds kind of funny doesn't it, that your local library could help you on your next run, but it can. If you don't know, when I fill in the time between weddings, I can be found working a few hours here and there at my local library.  It wasn't until I worked there that I realized how many awesome resources there are available.

I'm going to let you in on some information that you may not realize is FREE and available to you.

MUSIC, did you know that most libraries have digital libraries that allow you to use your library card to not just checkout music.  But actually legally download for FREE to keep for life?

Mine for instance allows me to download and keep up to 5 different songs a week.  It's a program called FREEGAL.  You use your library card number and information to log in.
The music is actually top hits, and popular stuff that is on the market today as well as lots of music from the past.
(I use this all the time, it is awesome to help build your running playlist!)
Not to mention, all the money you save on buying tunes you can put towards race fee's and gear!

OTHER MUSIC, say you want entire albums or hard to get songs.  There are programs like for instance HOOPLA that if your library is signed up for it.  You get to use and checkout these items FREE, and generally they checkout for 1-3 weeks.  Then the item automatically returns themselves at the end.  Want it again, just check it out again.  Or if you are sick of it, just let it return and try a different album.
My library allows up to 10 album downloads a month.  It's pretty cool, and we are talking brand new releases from popular artists!

WORKOUT DVD'S, want to mix a little cross training into your schedule? Yoga, Dance, Jillian Michael's, etc.  Most libraries carry almost any workout dvd you could possibly want, and many you haven't even heard of. You could even go back in time and go Sweat'n to the Oldies with Richard Simmons, LOL.
Don't see the DVD you want, just ask your librarian if they participate in inner library loans, and you can have it sent to you from another library that does have it!

How awesome is that!  How often have you bought a workout DVD only to get bored of it after a few weeks or a month and it just sits in your collection now? Imagine if you didn't have to waste your own money anymore, and you could use a different workout DVD every week/month etc...

AUDIO BOOKS, want to loose your mind on your next long run to a great book? Or try something new and learn a new language while you run?
Download these onto your phone or Ipod for FREE and remove them when your done.
Most libraries have several versions available, I personally enjoy using OVERDRIVE and find that one to be the easiest, but you can also use HOOPLA or any other your library uses.

BOOKS, no matter if you want to try the popular Whole 30 diet, or any other great healthy cookbooks, Galloway, or healthy living, exercise, diet etc...  Your library likely has them all, if they don't have the one you want, ask them to order it in.  Or have them do a library loan, and get it from a different library that does carry it.  Yes, all of this is FREE for you to use.

Libraries have all these awesome FREE resources for you.  I haven't seen very many items other bloggers talk about not available at my own library for free, minus the popular P90x, Beachbody (At least mine doesn't carry that one.)

Most things come in both hard copy or  digital, so you don't even have to go to the library to get them. You can download them from you phone, tablet or home computer.

I will admit, there are some cities with some very small libraries, and they may not have everything you could want.  However, even small libraries generally participate in library loans with other libraries.  You won't know if you don't ask!

(TIP, if you don't have access to libraries in your area.  Next time your near a larger big city see how much they charge for an out of area pass.  Depending on the yearly fee, if you use it, it might cost less than buying workout DVD's or Music on your own, and then you'd have unlimited resources with their online services!)

So next time you want to try something new, why not try it for FREE at get it from your library.  That way you can try things out and make sure you really want it before you buy them, or just use them while you need them, return them to the library and then move onto the next thing.

Do you take advantage of your local library to help you with your workouts?
Do you download the libraries free legal music to add to your playlists?
Did you know all these resources are easily available for your FREE use?

Favorite Books of 2014 and My Reading Goal

Normally I would have a book review post running.  But since it is nearing the end of the year, I thought I would do something a little different.

In January I mentioned I had a goal this year to read at least 60 books.  At the time I thought it was a crazy goal, and I wasn't sure if I would make it.
Sunday afternoons I set aside for reading.  I try to read 3-4 hours if I can.  I generally read about 100 pages an hour so yes I am a pretty fast reader which means I can usually get through most novels in one afternoon.

So how did I do?  Well thanks to Goodreads and actually tracking my books this year I know exactly how well I have done.  I apparently crushed my goal.  I have read.....

70 Books this year
23,000+ pages read
6 of those books were audio books I listened to.
Only did book reviews on 40 of those books, because unless I really loved a book I don't review it on my blog:)

I might get a couple more read before the end of the year, because I just picked up 2 sequels today that I have been waiting all year to read and I am already 2/3rds done with #71.

You probably think I am a read-a-holic.  I wish I could say I read every day, but that is not true.
I really only get to read Sunday afternoons with few exceptions.  Truthfully, I just read really fast, but I do actually read every word (I promise) I don't skim.
I have also found I really enjoy listening to a good book while I run!

So with all those books, I do have some favorites!
Now to make my favorites list, a book has to be well written. and must keep my interest throughout, and throughout any books in it's series.  Additionally, when I finish that book/series in order to be on my favorite list, it has to be a book that when I am done I literally hug:)
Yes, I am a book hugger haha:)

Here are my 2014 FAVORITES

#1 The Selection Series - The Selection, The Elite & The One by Kiera Cass

#2 The Precious Stone series - Ruby Red, Sapphire Blue & Emerald Green by Kierstin Gier

#3 The Shatter Me series - Shatter Me, Unravel Me, Ignite Me by Tahera Mafi,

#4 Dustland Series Blood Red Road, Rebel Heart, Raging Star by Moira Young

#5 The Hunt Series, The Hunt, The Prey & The Trap by Andrew Fukuda

#6 The Everneath Series, Everneath, Everbound & Evertrue by Brody Ashton

#7 The Fallen Series, Fallen, Torment, Passion & Rapture  by Kate Lauren

(With the exception of The Fallen Series, the rest I read all the books in previous years, except for the final books in the trilogies were read this year.)

Also, on my book review tab at the top of my blog you can find reviews of all of these books!

I would like to note, I am pretty sure The Evolution of Mara Dyer Series will be added to this list above, as I have absolutely loved the first two books and plan on starting the third book (hopefully this weekend:)

So what books have made your top 2014 favorite readings?  Are any of your favorites similar to my own?  Are you a book hugger? If so, what was the last book you hugged?

Dead Lawyers Tell No Tales - Book Review

I finished reading Dead Lawyers Tell No Tales by Randy Singer.  I'm so glad I chose this novel, it's a fast paced legal thriller with surprises at each turn of events!  With perfectly crafted characters, Dead Lawyers Tell No Tales kept me entertained and guessing right from the start until I turned the last pages!

"Landon Reed is an ex-quarterback convicted of organizing a point-shaving scheme.  In prison, he finds forgiveness and faith.  After prison, he earns a law degree and longs for an opportunity to prove his loyalty and worth.
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR.
Harry McNaughten is one of the founding partners of McNaughten and Clay - and the only attorney willing to take a chance employing an ex-con turned lawyer.  Though Landon initially questions Harry's ethics and methods, the crusty old lawyer wins Landon's respect with his brilliant legal mind and knack for winning.  But as the two lawyers prepare for a high-profile murder case, Harry is gunned down in what appears to be a random mugging.  Weeks later, the firm's leased jet explodes over Chesapeake Bay, and two more McNaughten and Clay lawyers are eulogized.  Somebody had a vendetta against the firm, and Landon, his family, and his sole remaining partner are the final targets.
As Landon struggles to keep the firm together, the can't help but wonder:  Is the plot related to a shady case from McNaughten and Clay's past, or to the murder trial he's neck-deep in now?  And will he survive long enough to find out?"

I loved this book and the characters, and yes I said loved!  In my opinion this novel was brilliantly written.  Because I absolutely dislike reviews that contain spoilers, I will not ruin any details in the plot itself for you.
But I have to say, rarely do I read a book that I can't guess the ending by the time I get to the middle or even by three fourths into it!  In fact I thought I had this one pinned, and was pretty sure of myself having thought I had it all figured out.  Even though I found myself several times throughout this novel, re-thinking my theories and changing my mind.
This book had so many turns and twist of events.  That when I finished I just said to myself.  Wow, I didn't see that coming!  Being able to write a novel so intricately so a reader is still hooked and guessing throughout is a rare skill and Randy Singer has it!

Additionally, the story-line is well researched and realistic as are the characters.  Anyone who loves football, criminal law or just loves to bury them self in a great book full of fast paced suspense will not be disappointed!  I found Dead Lawyers Tell No Tales to be a clean read.  Randy Singer is an author who understands how to write a thriller without having to insert excessive amounts of foul language to get his point across.  If your child picked this up you wouldn't have any problem with them reading it as well.  If you are someone who is like me and appreciates high quality intriguing suspense, you'll want to pick this one up!  Like I said above, it won't disappoint!

The Elite by Kiera Cass - Book Review

Anyone who knows me, also knows The Selection (book one in this series) was my favorite read in 2012.  The usual problem with absolutely loving a book so much, is by the time you get to the next book in the series there is generally a feeling of disappointment.
Not this time!  I almost enjoyed The Elite as much as The Selection. Yes, I said almost:)  It was good, but not quite as fabulous as the first.  However, it is still a fast read, a page turner that for myself I sat and read in one sitting.

The Elite, takes right up where book one left off.  Thirty-five girls in the selection process have been dropped down to the elite six.  America, the main character is just as strong and lovable as she was in The Selection.   I wondered how Cass would keep The Elite as intriguing as The Selection was, as well as keeping us readers wanting more.  But she did it!  I hate spoilers, so I will leave out the actual details.  For those who know me, you already know I am a team Maxon fan!  But let's just say, a series of events occur that flip the tables and occasionally have you as a reader re-thinking if you are a Maxon or Aspen fan.
Additionally, we were left to thinking that America's status in the selection was clinched as per where book one left off.  You'll love (or love to hate) the twist of events that leave even those thoughts hanging in the air.

This book also gets more into the other characters, where as before we didn't know much of any details.  Again bringing a whole new set of issues and intrigue to the story-line.  Additionally, you finally get a little more of a sense of why things are the way they are, and that there is a lot more for America to consider than just a fairy tale life that she could win.
For me, the only thing I didn't really enjoy was the fact that now I have too many unanswered questions and will be forced to wait until the next book is released!  I have my own theories (or what I want to happen), but as I occasionally am with book series I don't ever get the exact ending I want.  (Guess only the writer gets that.)  My biggest hope is that America's character stays true to what we all fell in love with during The Selection.  Well that, and (this is only my opinion) but I still want her to end up with Maxon in the end!

The Elite by Kiera Cass is a Young Adult Dystopian.  Who will like this book?  Well they have compared it to a Hunger Games vs. the Bachelor...  For me personally I don't see it quite that way at all, at least not the Hunger Games comparison.  But if you like a great clean Young Adult novel, that is written with adults in mind.  If you enjoy romance with a girly spin on things (yes like the t.v. show the Bachelor).  If your a dreamer, who enjoys a futuristic fairy tale in a completely imperfect world.  Then you will likely enjoy This book series!  Which is why this one gets my recommendation!

Runners Spotlight - Let me Introduce you to AMY

Every runner has a story, that pushes them and drives them to do what they do.  I find it fascinating to learn about others, and in return it also inspires and motivates me.  I know I am not the only one who feels this way.  Runners Spotlights are now a weekly series I do on Thursdays.

This week I'd like to introduce you to Amy.
I asked Amy several questions, to help tell part of her story and introduce you all to her.

Amy blogs at Faithfully Hoping

When did you start running?  What inspired you to begin?

I always loathed running. Not just a hate, I loathed it. In high school I would always walk the mile.
As I began my exercise program in February 2011, the program I chose called for a 30 minute walk everyday. This I felt I could handle. I was relieved no running was required. However, as the days and weeks went by my walks began to become faster and faster. So much so that my husband soon stopped walking with me because I was passing him up. He couldn’t keep up with me.
One evening I was doing my normal walk and I had the desire to run. I had never had that feeling before, but I went with it. 5 seconds later I was left huffing and puffing and walking the remainder of my walk. But that’s what started things. From there I began simply walking then running, back and forth building up my stamina.
November 2011 I ran my first 5K. My goal that day was to simply run the entire race. I was successful and forever hooked.

What distances do you like to run/race?
I have only done 5K’s up to this point. The first time I ran a 10K was at the end of an Olympic length triathlon. I’m currently training for a half marathon. This has been a bit of a challenge for me. Before this, a long distance run was anything over 4 miles. Now my long runs go upwards into the double digits. I’m still undecided on whether I like the longer distances. I’d like to concentrate on doing more 10K’s in the future.

Do you have a favorite race you have run?  Tell us about it.

This is definitely a difficult one to narrow down. One race is Iron Girl Del Mar. This was the first 5K I did in November 2011. It’s an all women’s race. The first year I noticed they had mother/daughter teams and I mentioned this to my mom. While she has never been a runner, she agreed to do it with me the next year. November 2012 she came out and did her first 5K with me. Needless to say, this is a very special race for me and holds a lot of meaning.
I also did the Hot Chocolate 5K in San Diego this year and it was great! It was a lot of fun. It was a good mixture of the qualities of a fun race and the challenges of a competitive race. TriRock San Diego was pretty amazing as well.
You've had a successful and incredible weight loss journey.  What tips do you have for someone who wants to start on their own weight loss journey?  What types of motivation/mind set did you use, that you suggest others find?

Oh I have quite a few tips and tricks. But none of those will do anyone any good if someone isn’t in the right frame of mind. I found this is the most important aspect of lasting weight loss. I have lost and found weight many times over the years. It really isn’t about losing the weight. There are a ton of diets and fads out there that will help you lose weight. But if you aren’t in the proper mindset it will all be for nothing. The weight will just come back.
I first had to come to the point where I was simply done with being fat. I was over it. This came to me in the form of being at the end of my rope in my life in general. At that point, I didn’t feel like I could control anything in my life, but what I could control was my weight. The triggers for this are different for everyone. But the fact is you have to come to a desire for lasting change. The fact is I understood I had to make changes that I would keep for the rest of my life. This was not going to be a quick fix. Quick fixes don’t last. I had to realize that I had to forever alter the way I lived my life. This can be an overwhelming decision.
Once I came to terms with that, I began to slowly change the way I ate. I didn’t drastically alter my diet and the foods I ate. I didn’t even begin working out for the first year and a half. I took things one step at a time, in order to not overwhelm myself. I didn’t want to set myself up for failure. Over the years, what I eat has gradually shifted and changed. I discovered as I changed my eating habits my taste buds began to change as well. My body began to crave the good food I was giving it. That isn’t to say I don’t still crave my sweets, because I do. But I also don’t deprive myself of the things I love. I simply allow for them in moderation. Let’s face it. A diet will never work in the long run if you aren’t allowed to eat the foods you love. On the flip side of that, you find new foods to love.
You also have to understand there will be setbacks. It won’t all go smoothly. There will be ups and downs. There is a learning curve as you begin to become more aware of your body and what it needs rather than simply what you desire. I had to shift my thinking about food. Food is now a way to fuel my body not just a source of enjoyment. Oh I still enjoy my food. But my perspective on food had to change. I had to come to terms with the fact that I had an unhealthy relationship with food. Surprisingly enough, this was a shock to me. That idea had never occurred to me. But if you stick through the ups and downs, the rewards are so much greater than any enjoyment you may find in food. You simply have to take things one day at a time. And when those off days come, you just pick yourself back up and move forward, learning from the experience.

Do you feel you will be a lifelong runner?

I’m not sure if I will be a life-long runner. As much as I love running, I don’t know if my body will be able to keep up. Having had all that extra weight on my knees all those years didn’t do them any favors. As I’ve been getting into the longer distances, I’ve found I’m having problems with them. This has made me question if I will be able to continue to run the way I want in the future. For the foreseeable future, I will be running. However, I do know one thing. Even if I am not running, I will be active in one way or another. I am forever addicted to my workouts.

Do you have any other sports or hobbies you enjoy?

Definitely! When I first began my exercise plan, I was doing kettlebells 4 times a week. This is how I fell in love with working out. While, I go through periods without using them much, I always return back to them. They are an amazing strength training tool with a touch of cardio as well. I highly recommend them!
I also ventured into yoga in those beginning months of working out. I fell in love with this practice as well. It pushes me in a completely different way than running. Plus, it is a great way to keep my muscles properly stretched and flexible.
My other love is my bike. Growing up my dad always cycled. I remember watching the Tour de France every year as a child. A few years ago, my husband decided to get out his old bike and begin cycling. We soon had to get him a new bike because his 20 year old mountain bike wasn’t quite cutting it. As I became more active, my husband encouraged me to try cycling out. I took one spin around the parking lot and was hooked. I love to bike.
Because I was running and then developed a love for cycling, the logical progression was for me to do triathlons. I did my first in February 2012 and was hooked on those as well.
Aside from all the workouts, I love to read. I also love movies. I find crocheting very relaxing, though I don't find as much time to do this. Finally, I enjoy making jewelry and being crafty in general. So I'm not all about the health and fitness stuff.

Do you add any cross training to your workouts?  What are they?
Always. Cross training is so incredibly important, not just for the physical benefits but the mental ones as well. It helps keep the boredom at bay. Obviously, it depends on what race I’m currently training for but I always incorporate cross training. Right now my schedule looks like this.
Monday - Rest
(Lately an active rest with a walk to the park with the husband.)
Tuesday - Kettlebells
Wednesday - Short run
Thursday - Yogo
Friday - Short run/Pace work
Saturday - Bike
(Unfortunately, my rides have been few and far between for a number of reasons lately.)
Sunday - Long run
You like to live life to its fullest now.  So is it just life in general that pushes you, or what types of things do you use to motivate and push you towards success now?
I am a typical type A, self motivated person. I am not happy without goals in front of me. The majority of my life, my goal was becoming a teacher. My entire education was built on becoming a teacher. I was so motivated to get through, I was able to graduate college in 3 ½ years. I quickly moved onto graduate school and soon had my first teaching job. I suddenly had no more life goals to focus on.
Health and fitness had never been a true goal in my life. It wasn’t even on my radar. I knew I was overweight, but I never realized the unhealthy relationship I had with food and exercise. Through a series of events, my life seemingly crumbled around me. I felt the only thing I could control was my weight so I dove in head first to that goal.
Little did I know how much that would change me. I hoped it would change my outward appearance. However, it changed me inside and out. The way I think about myself and the thoughts I think in my head are completely foreign to who I was before. The transformation is truly astounding. I actually feel good about myself. It gave me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. The old Amy would have never asked to have a spotlight post on her. She preferred hiding in the background. The new Amy says, “Sure let’s try it. If it doesn’t work, oh well. We gave it a shot.”
I continue to keep myself motivated through setting new goals and challenges. Whenever I’m training for one event, I’m thinking about my next step or goal. Currently, I’m training for a half marathon. I’m just testing the waters, so to speak, to see if a half ironman would be feasible for the future. It’s a balance between focusing on the goal currently in front of me and also looking to future goals to continually keep myself motivated. All this without overwhelming myself.

You love to read, what types of books are your favorite?
Amy and her husband trailing behind her
I have loved to read ever since I first learned. It’s an obsession of mine. I love the classics. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas is my all time favorite book. For the most part, I tend to lean toward mystery/action books. In high school, I read every John Grisham book I could get my hands on. This year I have begun reading James Patterson’s Alex Cross series. I have two more books and I am done with that series.
I love reading series. This is a bit selfish on my part. Whenever I finish reading a book, I feel like I am losing close friends. Reading a series prolongs that friendship a bit. However, it also exacerbates the pain of losing those friends.
Ted Dekker, Joel Rosenberg, Robert Ludlum, Agatha Christie, C.S. Lewis, Alexander Dumas are some of my favorite authors. I currently have a list of over 100 books I want to read, so there is always something new. Some of these books I am simply waiting to read until the movie comes out.
I have a theory on books turned into movies. If I read the book first, I won’t enjoy the movie. I will spend the entire time comparing the two and find the movie falls short. Because of this, if I know a book will be made into a movie, I force myself to wait on reading that particular book. This allows me to enjoy both the movie and the book. Last year my friend and I had a Harry Potter viewing marathon. It took us two days to watch every movie. I then spent the next two months reading the books. It was amazing.
You’re a teacher by profession.  Do you hope to inspire the students you teach in the coming years, the importance of a healthy lifestyle?

As a teacher, I’m placed in a unique position to influence the lives of my students. This is exponentially so in the particular school I currently teach. I work at a charter school in an extremely low socio-economic area. I do not have a typical classroom. My students are in independent studies. What this means is I have a group of about 30 students. I meet with each for one hour on Mondays and Wednesdays.
I teach high school students. Most of them are far behind in credits. For most of my students, this is the last place these students go in a last ditch effort to attempt at earning their high school diploma. Some of my students have even shared with me their families don’t believe they will ever graduate. Most of my girls have one or more children. Many of my boys have been suspended numerous times and/or expelled from school.
It can be a depressing job at times. However, I try to focus on the good. I try to be the best example I can to these students. I attempt to motivate them to be the best they can be. Not surprisingly, my girls are very interested in my weight loss. Whenever the topic is brought up, they have many questions for me. I try to encourage these girls to have a healthier view of their bodies.
While health and fitness isn’t necessarily a common topic, I do try to influence my students to make better choices in their lives. I encourage them when they tell me about their soccer games. When the topic of food comes up, I encourage them to eat better. They notice I don’t take their offers of candy and sweets. I mainly try to live by example. They notice more than I’m sure I even realize.
When you are trying to decide what blogs to follow, what are you looking for in a blog?

I like to read blogs that I can relate to. I’m sure this is true of most people. I like to see other people’s perspective on similar situations I am currently facing. It’s nice to know you aren’t alone in your struggles and even in your successes. I enjoy reading blogs of those that might be a bit more advanced than I am. It helps motivate me in my own journey. If a particular blog is relate able to my own life or simply has a compelling story or insight to life in general, I will typically stick around. Also, any blogger that is an active part of their blog in interacting with readers is a big plus.

Tell us about your blog, what types of things do you post about?

My blog is about me and my life in general. Many of my posts tend to be about my training and races and rides I’m doing. I use my blog as a way to track my progress and set goals for myself. There is a big focus on the active part of my life. However, when I get the chance I like to talk about my other interests. As I love to read, eventually, I’d like to incorporate book reviews.
I also talk about the different events and activities my husband and I become involved in our everyday lives. Occasionally, I’ll talk about the ups and downs of being a teacher. I also use my blog as a space to get my thoughts out. I’ve always been a writer and have kept a journal since I was 12. This is a bit of my public journal. Mostly it is the boring day to day things about my life. However, every once in a while I have a moment of introspection or insight that I like to share.

Amy has an incredible story, don't you think?

Runners Spotlight - Let Me Introduce BETH

Every runner has a story, that pushes them and drives them to do what they do.  I find it fascinating to learn about others, and in return it also inspires and motivates me.  I know I am not the only one who feels this way.

This week I'd like to introduce you to Beth.
I asked Beth several questions, to help tell her story and why she is proud to be a runner.  As well as introduce you all to her.

You’re a newer to the sport, tell us why you started running.
Well to be honest I really kind of started running to force myself to quit complaining about running.  So here is the story:  Forever, as long as I can remember, I hated running--I was slow, and it was really, really painful.  Last summer, I decided to enter into a local sprint triathlon down here at the beach.  I trained all summer.  The swimming and biking portions were no problem for me (I swam for a team in another life and was an avid spinning class attendee), but the measly 2 mile run killed me.  Come race day, I blazed (OK that may be an exaggeration)  through the open water swim and the bike, but literally doubled by overall race time during that sad, painful 2 mile run.  Right then and there, I told myself that I was going to train for and run a half marathon so that I will not suck at running anymore.  And I did it.  I ran my first half marathon, Rock N Roll New Orleans, this February.  What I didn't anticipate was for my general loathing of all things running to turn into a love.  I am so happy that I found this wonderful sport.  While I still plan on participating in some triathlons this season, my true new love is the road race!
Do you run for fun, run to compete?  Both?
I guess both, in a weird, never-will-be-placing-in-my-age-group kind of way.  I run because it's fun, and I love it, but I also run to compete against myself.  I know I will never be one of those people that places in their age group at races (unless I give up bourbon and pizza and I don't see that happening), so really my competition is with myself to get better, faster, and stronger.  What is it they say? Running never gets any easier, you just get better.  I hope that is case.  Right now, I am competing with my inner naysayer who is telling me that I will never run a half marathon in 2 hours or less...hush self-doubt.  Also, in all honesty, I would be lying if I said that I didn't count road-kills on my races. You know you do too...
What distances to you run/race?
I run a lot of local 5ks, but I really like long distance running.  I am really not super built for speed, so a sub 30 minute 5k is killer for me.  I love the half marathon; it is long enough to feel like a super challenge, but not body wrecking like the marathon, or so I have heard.  It is a total accomplishment to finish one alive.  I have never run a marathon and right now, I really have no desire to start training for one (OK, maybe a little desire).  I have only run one 10k, but I really enjoyed it--short enough to throw some speed in, but long enough to feel like an accomplishment.  Is it just me or are there like no 10ks anymore?
Have you ever won or placed in a race?
Are you kidding? Nope. And I'm totally OK with that.
Your blog puts you as a person who loves to have a lot of fun.  Tell us about the race you had the most fun at, and why.
Thanks! I do love to have a good time.  I guess the most fun race I have been to would be my first half marathon--the Rock N Roll New Orleans. I mean who doesn't like New Orleans?  No seriously, I ran it with my best friend--The Ginger (she makes regular appearances on my blog)--and her boyfriend.  My boyfriend--The Boy--came to be an awesome cheerleader.  The race itself was really fun--lots of bands on the course and everyone was really high energy.  There were tons of people there! like 16,000!  We stayed the night after the half marathon to do all the fun New Orleans stuff (hint...hint).  It was a total blast!

If you could run ANY race/distance in the entire world what/where would it be?
After the tragic events of this past April, I would love to run the Boston Marathon.  I think that being a part of the marathon next year would be an awesome and super fulfilling experience.  Just to participate in something that would stand for the solidarity of the the running community would be completely stellar.  However, there are some significant things standing in my way:  I will have to run a marathon, and I will have to do it in less than 3:35:00.  Which would be almost like having a pet unicorn who poops rainbows!
Besides running what other sports/hobbies do you participate in?
Well obviously, I love to read.  I also really, really love to eat...everything.  I also collect mid-century furniture, pottery, and art.  My awesome boyfriend, The Boy, gave me an awesome 1960's Telefunken stereo for Christmas so I have recently begun a vinyl record collection.  There is nothing better than that hiss and pop of a record.  I also really, really, really love college football--in particular my LSU Fighting Tigers! From August to January, I am a rabid Bayou Bengals fan, and will be talking non-stop about football.  My dad is a super fan as well, so all season long we talk football (much to the dismay of my mom and boyfriend).
Per your blog, you love to read.  What are your favorite books?
Wow, for a librarian that is really hard question.  It is super tough to narrow it to just a few books.  Can we do it categories?  I will.
Classic Fiction: Tender is the Night F. Scott Fitzgerald & The Sun Also Rises Ernest Hemingway
Contemporary Fiction: Wolf Whistle Lewis Nordan
Southern Fiction (too hard to narrow it to just one): Delta Wedding Eudora Welty, As I Lay Dying WIlliam Faulkner, The Moviegoer Walker Percy
Non-Fiction: Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide Nicholas Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn
A lot of people who love reading, like writing.  Do you ever come up with great book ideas while you’re out on your runs?
Yea, I really think about all the funny/ ridiculous things that happen at work and seriously think about writing a book about it. While you may not think so, but an academic library is a crazy place. When you deal with overly-excited, stressed out freshmen all day long, you hear and see some insane stuff (think study rooms...boys and girls...together).   I am seriously thinking about writing a memoir about the day in the life of a librarian.  If you see me out running, you will see me jamming to some tunes and cracking up thinking about all the stuff that happened at work.  Ya'll be on the lookout for my upcoming memoir.....
Do you run and listen to tunes?  If so, what are your top 3 favorite to pound the pavement too?
Yea, I do listen to tunes when I run alone.  When I am running with a group, I really like to chat and laugh, but when I'm alone I really need the energy of music to keep me upbeat and moving.  I know a lot of runners suggest that you should listen to your own breathing, but my breathing is just not that much fun.  Right now, I am really jamming to How You Like Me Now by The Heavy, Baby Come Back by Scissor Sisters, and Underdog by Imagine Dragons.
Tell us how you juggle work and life and still get your runs in.  What motivates you to put on your running shoes and head out the door?
Well besides the commitments my job, my boyfriend, and my parents (who do live in same city as I do), my time is really my own.  I'm not sure how you Mother Runners out there do it.  Ya'll manage to kick running butt and get home in time to make dinner and change diapers.  Insane!  For me, it's really a matter of planning my runs.  I am really a calendar oriented person, so having a structured, mapped-out training plan really keeps me motivated and on-track.  If I am just running-by-the-seat-of-my-pants without a plan, I tend to slack off and skip runs and workouts.  I am also a really goal-oriented person--I really need a future race or PR to shoot for to get my butt up and go.  Like right now, I am gunning for both a sub 30-minute 5k and sub-2 hour half marathon.
Do you hope to be a lifelong runner?
I would love to be a lifelong runner; running is something that I really, really enjoy.  I guess the test will be when I do eventually have a family and how I juggle running with all of my other life stuff. Stay tuned to find out...

When you go around looking for new blogs to follow, what types of things are you looking for?  What blogs/topics grab your interest and make you want to come back to read more?
I know this is totally sexist, but I really do enjoy reading running blogs written by women, more so than those by men.  Besides that, I really like looking for bloggers who are honest about their accomplishments and weaknesses.  I also look for good tips about running and food, awesome race reports, gear reviews, and a good sense of humor.  I really like to get a mix of bloggers who are running at different paces; the speedsters make push for better times, and I feel a bond with the "slower" (a term I don't like, but there is nothing else, perhaps..."pace challenged") runners out there.
Tell us about your blog, what do you post about?  What topics do you cover?  What can people expect when they visit?
My blog is about my adventures running, reading, and living through my life with my sanity intact.  I really talk honestly about my running--both my successes and failures, my weight loss goals, and my life in general.  You can expect training reports, race reports, gear reviews (I am starting a YouTube channel to do vlog reviews), book reviews (what kind of librarian would I be if I did not plug books), and just general running mayhem.  I hope that you will stop by and stay awhile.
What are your fitness/ running related goals for 2013?
My goals for this year are to 1) run a 5k in less than 30 minutes 2) run a half marathon in less than 2 hours 3) lose the last 15 lbs 4) tone up my upper body.  Think that's enough?  I do...wish me luck.

The Winnowing Season by Cindy Woodsmall

It's been a while since I have read an Amish book.  After reading The Winnowing Season by Cindy Woodsmall, I found myself wondering why I waited so long.  This book reminded me of all of the many little reasons I love a great Amish read!

The book takes off right from where Book one of the Amish Vines and Orchards left off.
Rhoda Byler is looking for a fresh start.  Ready to move to Maine and begin a brand new life, with  her boyfriend Jacob and his brother Samuel who is also her new business partner.  Starting up a new Amish Community, where she can practice her talents in horticulture in peace as well as hoping to stay away from those who feel her gifts in intuition are reasons to be shunned.

Just as Rhoda's life seems to be headed in a much better direction.  She gets slammed with an unwelcoming surprise and realizes she can't catch a break.  First betrayed by her friend, and then comes the discovery of the hidden secrets the man she is supposed to have a future with is hiding from her.  Will things work out, or all come crashing down on her?  Is her new beginning going to work out or only cause her additional conflict and heartache?

Cindy Woodsmall weaves a beautiful story!  I loved the personalities of Rhoda, Jacob and Samuel.  From page one, they'll feel exactly like real people to you.  Cindy brings you into their story so much you'll root for each character and each of their heart wrenching paths and choices.  The descriptions and imagery are incredibly written.  You'll feel like you are right there in this new journey in Maine and the Orchards they are working to rebuild.

I highly recommend The Winnowing Season to any reader who enjoys a fabulous Amish read.  If you have never read an Amish book, this series is definitely a great one to start with.  Even though this book is fiction.  It allows you a real insight into the Amish world and the real struggles they go through as well as the amazing faith they have to live the simple life they chose.  This book will leave you on a positive note wanting for more!  I can see why this book has hit the New York Times Bestsellers List!!!

AN INSPIRING READ "UNSTOPPABLE" BY NICK VUJICIC

I finished a compelling novel that I really enjoyed and feel others should take the opportunity to read and be inspired as well.

Unstoppable, The Incredible Power of Faith in Action by Nick Vujicic. Many of you may have heard about Nick. He was born without arms or legs and before the age of eighteen made the decision not to allow his disability to stop him from creating a life-long mission to serve and help others. Nick wrote it best in his book, “to simply say “I believe” in something is not enough. If you want to have an impact in this world, you must put your beliefs and your faith into action.” (Page 7)

In Unstoppable, the reader will join Nick on a journey of his successes and failures. He shares his own stories of being made fun of, feelings of complete despair and of being humbled. Nick also shares the romantic love story of how he met his wife Kanae, the woman who was willing to overlook his disabilities and see him for the incredible man he is inside.

Nick found his passion by discovering his own talents and using them to create a life of purpose, happiness and positive impacts on others. He has chosen to live a life without regrets by using his faith and his disability as a miracle in others eyes. I found many of Nick’s experiences quite uplifting and you will too! Reading his book I realized it’s never too late to make a difference in the lives of others.

Additionally, Nick tells inspiring stories of others around the world that have experienced everything from bullying, persecution, disability, career obstacles, addictions and cruelty beyond what most of us can comprehend. He shares his experience in meeting a young boy named Daniel, who like him was also born without limbs. In each of these stories, you’ll be uplifted and inspired as people find the faith they need to overcome their trials and start over again with a new purpose.

Personally I loved reading Unstoppable! Nick asked this question in his book. “You may ask, “what can I do?” or “What do I have to give?” the answer is, “yourself.” You and your God-given talents are the greatest gifts you can give.” (Page 201) I recommend this book for ages 12 and up, who like inspirational stories. Or for those who might benefit from the inspiring testimony of a man who refused to believe that a person with no limbs couldn’t make a difference.

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review. The opinions expressed are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.
