5 TIPS FOR CREATING YOUR POST

1. Don't do anything out of what you'd normally do!

Yes, this is a day you will shine, a day everyone in the hop and others who are unofficially participating in the hop will visit and comment on your blog post. So you do want it to show who you are, what you blog about in the best ways. So you will want to spend extra time to make sure it’s your best work. But don't create a post that you would never normally create.
This is your day to entice new blog followers, you want to stay true to who you are as a blogger, not create something specific that you don't normally post about just for the sake of the hop.

However, this hop has a Healthy Living theme to it, so your post should reflect a topic that would appeal to any aspect of it. ex. Food, Fitness, Running, Mind & Body, Diet & Nutrition, Sports, Recreation, Physical Activity, Safety etc...

2. Make sure you leave links to follow your blog in your post.

This is your day to grab new followers, but if you don't make it easy for them to follow you then why would they if they can't quickly figure out how?
Keep in mind most view blogs on mobile or tablet devices, so the fancy follow buttons you've installed on your blog webpage, may not show up for those users.

While you don't need to add all your follow options, it's always best to include the social media channels you are most active on. If you're not sure what shows up on a computer vs a mobile device then pull up your own blog on one of each and see.

3. Don't be too lengthy and don't be too short.

Depending on whom you ask you'll likely get a different answer. Some say posts less than 500-1,000 words aren't worth writing. Others may tell you they only like to read 300-500. Which is best for you? That is only something you can decide based on past interaction with bloggers on past posts you have written.

Because this is a hop, keep TWO things in mind. Everyone is busy and doesn't have time to read a novel. However, don't write a post too short that others can't tell your personality and writing style from it. After all, we are all deciding if we want to keep following the bloggers we meet in the hop after it is over.

4. Basic Grammar and Spell Check.

No one in the hop is going to get on your case if you make mistakes, we all do. I doubt I've ever created a perfect post yet. However, one of the easiest things you can do is spell check. Posts with obvious errors are less likely to flow and appeal to the average viewer. Do your best with a little basic grammar checking too, a post that is easy to read is going to attract more than one that doesn't!

5. Use images and clear images.

When it comes to blogs and reading online studies have shown we like visual tools. Not only that, you should always include at least 1 pinnable image per post, so that others who like it can pin and share. Additionally, clear pictures that don't give the viewer a headache are going to help tell the story, explain your theory, peak our attention.

MOST IMPORTANT - Create your post well in advance! This will give you more time to polish it up and it won't appear to the rest of us as something that was rushed.

5 Reasons Why Every Blogger Needs an About Me Page

When I first started to put together February's Grow Your Blog Hop. I looked over past participants suggestions on what they would like to see from bloggers they might be interested in networking with.

Over half of all the suggestions given mentioned these:

* They said it was hard to get to know some bloggers in a short time.
* Some wrote spotlight posts that didn't do anything to let them as new visitors know what they could expect or see on their blog.
* Some mentioned they tried searching for about me pages on some blogs that grabbed their curiosity to see if they could find more on if that was a person they wanted to follow. But many didn't have an ABOUT PAGE or didn't have much to their pages.

Because of this, the idea for this post came about.

#1 People who visit your blog want to know who you are.

Not every reader is also a blogger. The vast majority of people who read blogs aren't bloggers at all. They stumble upon your page in because a search engine brought them there because of a topic you wrote on. If they are intrigued if they liked your post they came across, they are going to search more about you. They want to see your About page, see who is the blogger behind the scenes. They want to know who you are.

#2 So you can show viewers your personality.

If someone comes across your page, they may look at your about me page. You should make sure your blogger personality shines through on it. Everyone has a unique voice, we all have our own personalities that make us who we are as bloggers. Our personalities are going to attract people to our blogs. If you don't have an about page that showcases your personality, your potentially losing many followers who may have become long term followers if they found out more about you the first time they visited your blog.

#3 So you can tell others why you started writing.

Did something happen in your life that impacted you and that was the reason you started a blog? Or maybe you did it because it was a fun way to talk about your hobbies and talents. No matter the reason, you have a story and you should share it. This is essentially your time to advertise (so to speak) to others why they should follow your blog.

#4 To show off your mission statement.

If you are a blogger you likely have a mission statement. If not, I highly recommend you consider writing one.  This can be who you are, what you believe, what drives you. There are many things that can make up a mission statement. It doesn't have to be big and long either. I once saw a gal's blog who summed her's up in the most fabulous one sentence I have ever seen. I've also seen lengthy ones that really move and inspire. Your about page is one of the most incredible opportunities to share your blogs mission statement show others why you are who you are and why you do what you do.

#5 Advertisers do look at these.

I understand not all bloggers have any desire to turn their blog into a business and start reviewing products or creating posts to make money on their blogs.  But those that do have a desire to at any point in their blogging career turn a profit. If you don't have an About page, you are going to miss out on many opportunities.  Last year alone, I can easily say I had over 30 advertisers reach out to me. Based on something they saw on my About Me page that they liked and said intrigued them to contact me. It's also one of the first pages advertisers look at when you reach out to them. If you can intrigue them enough in your initial email contact. Trust me I know, I used to work in advertising and marketing. The about page is the first thing you go for. To decide if you want to pursue or ignore them.

Those are my 5 reasons why every blogger needs an about me page.  But there are a few other things you should consider.

A quick list of what you may want to include on your About Me page:

* A picture, current enough to still be relevant.
* All your follow options, buttons.
* What you blog about.
* Your true voice - Don't pretend you're someone you're not!
* Intrigue, Capture and introduce yourself in a way that grabs attention.
* Your Mission Statement.
* A way to contact you.
* Current information - not stuff you used to blog about but do not anymore.

ABOUT pages are very important, especially to bloggers interested in growing their blogs. If you don't have one, you are missing out on one of the key things needed to grow your blog.

How To Know if Your Blog is a Hobby or a Business

Unless you're a business owner, and your blog is an extension of your business website. I think most take up blogging because we think it might be a fun hobby.  After we start building up a few blogger relationships, it becomes a really fun hobby.

It's also a great outlet, where we can talk about things we love and enjoy.  We can let things out and not drive our close friends and family crazy hearing about all the things we are passionate about all the time.  Not only that but we learn and grow, and we in return teach others and help them learn and grow as people and bloggers.

Eventually we start seeing other bloggers getting paid to do things, or cool products or free race entry fee's. It doesn't take long before small business and start ups will start contacting us asking us if we want to try things out for reviews, or run giveaways.  One day, we decide to accept one one of these offers. Which is where the topic of this post comes into play.

How do you know if your blog is a hobby or a business?

This is a subject so many bloggers actually get wrong for themselves. There are so many hobby bloggers out there, who are in fact running a small business and probably don't even know it and it could come back and bite them in the butt one day.

So if you want to know where you fall , here are 3 questions to ask yourself.

Do you ever accept product in return for a review?
Do you ever accept money in return for a review or guest post?
Do you sell a product or service on your blog?
Do you run ads on your blog?

If you answered YES to ANY of these, then your blog is a business.

If you answered NO to ALL then you are still a hobby blogger.

I know what some of you are thinking, how can receiving a product or a free race entry mean my blog is a business, not just a hobby?  I'm going to give you a little insight into this.

So many think that blogging is just a hobby and trying things out, trying different products are an extension of that hobby.  They don't realize if you accept ANY product ANY free thing to write a post on, you are accepting that as payment for that service.

Yes, product and free things given to you in return for your review are in fact payment!  If you are making a profit, even by product only.  Additionally, you can sure as bet the IRS considers this a business!

Those business who send you those things, write those things off on their taxes and note that they sent them to you.

Do you need to set it up as a business and obtain a Tax ID # and all that jazz?

Maybe, maybe not.  That is only a decision you can make after speaking to an accountant regarding your own specific situation.

If you are doing this a couple of times a year, you may be fine to declare it on your own personal taxes.  If you are receiving free product, you will list and declare the product value.

However, if you are thinking of making it a steady thing.  If you are working with ad agencies and companies whether you are receiving payment, or receiving product frequently, you should consider speaking to an accountant, mostly for your own protection.

The great news for business bloggers!

You also get to declare some things on your taxes as well.  Some examples:

* Monthly Hosting Fee's & domain name fees.
* Any purchases you made for your blog.
* Paid blog conferences/workshops.
* Your camera, your computer.
* Software, purchased images.
* Paypal fees.
* Postage fee's (for sending out giveaway prizes.)
* Supplies you used to help create the posts and tutorials for your blog: Ex. ingredients for recipe's, DIY projects...
There are more things, you'd just have to look at your own situation and make that determination.

Yes, I did ask my own accountant if I could count race entry fee's:)
While you can, you have to be very careful, are you making enough revenue off your blog and your race recaps and paid race promotions that the IRS would consider your running these races as part of your business.  If the money you are making, out does the cost for the races and you have formulated it into your blog's business plan, then you might be able to.
But if you start doing it, and it's not legit, be prepared to possibly be audited!  Before doing this, I highly recommend you seek advice from a professional accountant!

Should you be filing taxes on your blog this year?

Well that is a question you should ask your accountant, I am not a professional to give you any sort of advice on what you should or shouldn't be doing.

Let them guide you and help you determine what is required by you!

My hope is you will now have a better understanding of the difference between a business blogger and a hobby blogger.
Can you go back and forth between the two? Of course!  Each year is a different year so if this year you turned into a business by accident, then next year you will know what you need to do, to stay a hobby blogger.

I hope this was helpful for some of you who come across this post!

The Summer Blogging Slow Down

You may or may not have noticed I have significantly dropping the amount of posts I have been running this summer.

There are two reason's for this.  One being, I am more of a summer gal than any other season and summer means time to play and it means less time I will spend looking at a screen.

Another is, others feel the same way.  I've looked at my blogging stat numbers over the past several years, and summer stats drop a little and I am fairly certain I am not alone in this.

People get busy, or want to be outside playing and to be honest that is a better place for them then sitting in front of a screen.

Which is how the idea for this post came up. Summer blogging, and my suggestions and tips on it. Granted, remember to take this as purely my opinion, absolutely no offense was meant to be made to anyone!

THINGS TO REMEMBER

* It's okay if your numbers drop a bit in the summer. It's, normal.  Don't stress about it, and don't feel like a failure or that your blog is going downhill.

* It's okay not to post quite as often.  Give yourself a break, take a vacation or give your dedicated readers a break.  There are lots of reason's to blog a little less and in my opinion it probably won't hurt your blog in the long run, unless you stop blogging altogether.
Which you can also do, but stopping completely may require you to begin the rebuilding process when you come back.

* Have extra time, it's okay, to write posts and store them for the fall.  Spring, Winter & Fall I like to blog 4-5 times a week and try to stay consistent with it.  But life happens and blogging takes time and during those months I may not be able to write that much each week.  Which is why yes, if I do have spare minutes to spend writing a post, I will just save it in my drafts to use another time.

* If you follow other bloggers, don't feel like you are letting them down if you miss a few posts or a week while you're on vacation.  No one is going to blame you for having a life:)  Besides if your a some type of healthy living blogger, we promote getting out and enjoying life and we can't do that if we feel super obligated to visit every single blog we follow every day.  No one is going to look down upon you if you miss a few posts.  It's summer, we all understand!

* If you have plenty of time and you can keep up your normal blogging routine, then go for it. Just keep in mind others might not be able to spend as much time, so don't get bummed if you're not getting the page views or comments that you normally do.

* Don't stress on any thing blog related!  I say this all the time, blogging should be fun!  Unless you have turned it into a $50k-$100k full time job (if you have I am jealous).  Even if you use it to make a little side income as I do, it is a hobby and all hobbies should be enjoyed.
If you feel stressed, get off your computer or tablet and go outside get a run in, go for a hike, take a swim or start up a new sport.  Come back to blogging after a little time away, and remember to keep it fun, enjoyable and stress free!

* Take a bit of a break and slow down a little and work on other things.  Maybe summer is a great time to work on building your social media following.  Or going back in and editing older posts that were popular and bringing them back to life again.  Clean up your blog or make over due edits to it. It's a great time, to try new things.

Do you take blogging breaks during the summer?  If you watch your stats, do you also notice a slowing trend in the summer months?  Or are you just super awesome and never have trouble posting frequently and regularly?  (I wish that could be me, but it's not:)

How to Run an Effective Blog Giveaway

It's the first Thursday of the month, which means I venture from running topics, and talk about blogging topics instead.
Today, I want to focus on How to Run an Effective Blog Giveaway.

Sounds simple enough, host a giveaway on your blog.  But did you know there are a lot more what, when and why... to consider before you decide to host a giveaway?

WHY?

Let's start with the why.  Why would you want to host a giveaway?  Yes, they can be fun, it's always great to feel like your giving someone the opportunity to win something.
But there are several more reason's to consider hosting a giveaway on your blog.
You've probably seen advertisers do it, companies will host giveaways either through ad campaigns or on their websites directly.  Do you know why they do it?  It's not out of the kindness of their hearts or for the tiny tax break they get for giving away a free item or two.  They do it, because it drives traffic to their site and helps build their brand.

So why not drive traffic to your blog through a giveaway?  Giveaway participants come in a couple of ways for bloggers.  You have both old and new returning viewers to your blog.  You also will likely have a huge amount of first timers, who may only come to visit that one time.  However, if done correctly, and if you have a great looking or interesting blog.  You may just grab some of those first time giveaway viewers as long term followers.

Of course to do this, you have to run an Effective Blog Giveaway.  You can't just throw something together on a whim, and assume because you're giving something away, others will come.
Truth is, they won't come because few will know about it, unless you planned it out in advance. I'd like to share with you some of my own tips as well as others I have learned as I have hosted giveaways.

WHAT?

What should you giveaway?  This is not really something that anyone can say, do this and it will work best.
Generally if you're giving something away, you are going to want to make sure it falls within your blogs theme.  If you are a sports blogger, but you are giving away a diaper bag.  Not only did you just ignore your current audience.  But all those first time visitors to your blog, you just confused them on what your blog is really about.

Even though a gift card is always a great option, because it allows someone the opportunity to buy what they want.  It's not always the best choice.
As you work with companies and brands, start working out some awesome deals on things you yourself would want.
It's a known fact, the bigger the brand, the more people are going to be interested!

If you've visited other bloggers giveaways, have you ever stopped at one and thought the item wasn't worth the time to enter?  Just because something might be free to win, doesn't mean it's worth winning!
Keep these things in mind as you decide what you want to giveaway.

WHEN?

Run a giveaway when it is appropriate.  The day before a holiday, or just before a weekend are generally not the most effective times to launch a giveaway.
This is when you should look at your analytics, see which days you have the most traffic.  Look at the times of the month where your traffic is highest.
Use that information to gear your dates for your giveaways.

Also, consider the length.  Generally 2 weeks is pretty standard for a giveaway.
I personally don't care much for giveaways that go on for a month or several months, I will have forgotten about it.
Plan yours for the right length.  You don't want to run it too short or too long.

BE CREATIVE

Be creative with your prize.  Be creative with your giveaway post.  Be creative with how you want people to enter.  This is your time to use your giveaway to build your blog.
If all you want is a short time of page views, then go ahead and just ask them to leave a comment to enter. But if you're looking for long term followers, use the opportunity to build your social media following, get your blog out there, get it in front of other eyeballs.

PURPOSE

Think about your purpose and goals for your giveaway.  Do you want to increase your traffic, do you want to build your followers?  Decide what your purpose for the giveaway is, and start planning from there.

BUDGET

If you're lucky you can get companies to sponsor your giveaways.  If you have the stats and the page views and a decent following base.  This can actually be easier than you think.  Send out your media kit, pitch your idea to them and see who wants to use your blog to advertise with, in the form of a giveaway.

Don't have a big blog, or enough of a following.  Then you're probably going to have to shell out a little cash to do this on your own.  Consider it an investment.
Sometimes you really do have to spend a little money to make money.  The same rings true with giveaways. Depending on your purpose and goals, and if you do it right.  You'll likely find it is worth the investment.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

If you keep it simple to enter, then people will enter.  If you make someone do a dozen things to get 1 entry, chances are you're not going to get many entrants.  Especially if you are giving away a small lower budget item.
Not everyone has a specific form of social media to follow, so keep that in mind and give your entrants a couple of different options to enter so you can make it work for the masses.

Not only keep it simple for your entrants, but make sure it's simple for you to capture your entrants info.  Which is why using third party systems like Rafflecopter can really help you out.

PROMOTE PROMOTE PROMOTE

You're giveaway is getting ready to launch, let others know.
Your giveaway launched, get the word out.
If you're not promoting your giveaway each and every day in all the ways you know, you're not running an effective giveaway.
If you blog frequently, you should PIN an image with a click through on your blog's side bar, near the top for the remainder of your giveaway.  So that others as they stop by your blog, they can visit your giveaway and know it's going on.
If you aren't doing your part to get the word out, how can you expect a successful giveaway?

SET GOALS

I personally like to set goals for each giveaway.  Before it runs, I look at my past giveaway stats and I determine my new goals for the new giveaway.
How many page views I hope to get, new followers etc...
Then I make sure my plan is going to get me there.
Sure it's fun in itself to host a giveaway.  But why not use it as a time to challenge yourself, set some fun goals to work towards.  If you get to have the fun with a side purpose, you're going to find you enjoy your own giveaways even more!

REACH OUT TO OTHER BLOGGERS

Maybe you have a good blogger friend, that you want to team up with?  Or possibly you just have good friends who will help you promote your own giveaway.  If you do, why not use them!  Let them know you'll do the same thing for them when they need it!

Giveaway Hops, if you don't know already I host health and fitness giveaway hops.  Four of them this year, one going on right now (HERE).
If you don't have the traffic on your own to host an effective giveaway.  Then I highly recommend you join a giveaway hop (there are all kinds out there, you can always find ones to join that fit your blogs theme.).
In hops, all the bloggers participating each bring their own followers into the mix, there is a high potential to get a larger increase in traffic by participating in these.
Not to mention, it's a great opportunity to meet and follow other bloggers who are in your niche, build relationships and long term following bases.

* I have to say, I have met MANY awesome blogger friends through link ups and giveaway hops, they really are effective for this!
Want to join one of mine?  Visit HERE to see what is coming up and sign up to be alerted when sign up's begin.

SUBMIT YOUR GIVEAWAY

I do this often, it depends on the giveaway of course.  But submitting your giveaway on large giveaway communities or forums, is going to bring you lots more eyeballs and increase the effectiveness of your giveaway.
Most are free, however some do charge a small fee if you want your listing promoted or enhanced.

Here are a few I have used that I like:
Giveaway Promote
Contest Girl
Online Sweepstakes
Blog Giveaways
Giveaway Round Up (Wednesday's)

EMAIL ALL YOUR ENTRANTS

This is actually something that I am going to be trying for the first time soon.
There are a few ways you can do this.  If you have a giveaway that allows for entrants to enter daily, why not email all of them once mid giveaway and remind them to come back for more entries.
Or after the giveaway, why not email all the entrants and remind them to come back to your blog to check to see if they are the winner...  Thank them for entering your giveaway.
You definitely don't want to harass them, but this is your giveaway.  Reaching out to them a few times is completely fine.  (Include it in the fine print (disclaimer) that this may happen.)  Not only that, but a great way to keep the page views up.

COLLECT EMAILS

NOTE: You can only do this if you included a disclaimer in your giveaway.  After your giveaway, download all of your new emails into a master giveaway email list.
Use this list wisely and make sure you use a system that they can unsubscribe from at a later date. But if you periodically host giveaways, you can send out a mass email each time letting all of those in your list know.

KEEP YOUR GIVEAWAY STATS

Keep track of the numbers and stats from your giveaway.  You can use this later on when you contact brands, and ask them to sponsor you for others.
If you're a blogger who is interested in building your blog.  You need to create a brand for yourself, and all the different ways you can help advertisers reach new audiences.  These giveaways are great ways to not only build your following base, but also build you up in the eyes of potential advertisers for your site.

It's a lot of info this I know.  But running a successful and effective giveaway is more important to most than to just do it for fun.  Which is why I wanted to tackle this subject today.

Have you hosted a giveaway on your blog before?  Let me ask you, what tips to you have, or do you use to help your giveaways succeed?
