Christmas Tree and Dry Skin Miracle Saver

I'm heading into the final two weeks of this semester, I can't believe how fast the time has gone. I also can't believe I still have a hard time figuring out how to fit blogging into my schedule.

I did go up north a week ago to visit my family for Thanksgiving, it was fun seeing them and one of my nieces grabbed onto my leg begging me not to go back to college. It was cute, I won't lie I love how much she adores me, as I adore her just the same!

I'm still dealing with the headaches, but I received this awesome new Humidifier free to try thanks to participating in the Influenster program. I was skeptical that it would make a difference, however, I have been feeling slightly better.

More importantly, my skin feels SO MUCH BETTER! Seriously, living in the desert is awesome, but how it dries your skin out is not so much awesomeness. I swear I was putting lotion on numerous times a day and hardly felt it made much a difference.

I've had the humidifier for a week now, and HUGE difference. I only need to apply lotion once a day now, and when I wake up in the morning my face no longer feels like it's dry and tight. I run the humidifier on high pretty much all the time when I am at home.

The one they sent me works fabulously and better than I could have hoped. It was one of those miracles in disguise that I was chosen to review it for Influenster and Honeywell. I highly recommend getting a humidifier to help with even the dryness of turning the heat on in your homes.

If your interested in getting a humidifier definitely check this one out,  AT THIS LINK

I also got my Christmas tree up! I wasn't going to put one up, but my sister said a girl who has 36+ pine tree's in storage (for the event and wedding company) cannot, not put one up for the holiday. So I gave in and grabbed a smaller one from storage and hit up the dollar store for some ribbon and a bow and pulled out my marshmallow smores camping ornaments. Went with red lights because well, it just sounded pretty and put the tree in a small wheel barrel because it looked like a cute stand!

I've been enjoying running, last week my schedule was a bit lighter to get ready for the heavy loads I would be doing this week and finals next week.
I took a new trail, and literally came within 1/2 mile from crossing the Arizona border, I totally would have gone further but it was getting late in the evening and I wanted to get back home before it got dark out. Definitely going to do this one again and run into AZ, and the gorge which is where per the map at one of the parks said it comes out of. If you know the area, then you know how stunningly gorgeous the gorge is!

I also had to head to Zion National Park for a class project. But finished the project as quick as I could and went out sightseeing and of course hiking!
Probably my favorite weekend there so far. The shuttles are shut down for the season and the amount of people in the park was significantly less.
It was awesome to have less people and actual peace and quiet out on the trail, I loved it!
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy people too. But the new types of crowds on National Park trails are the annoying playing their music as they hike type, and I don't care if it offends anyone I very much dislike those types!

It was beautiful though, light snow on the higher elevation areas within the park. The trails were a little icy when I got up high and to the top, but it was perfect and cool 50-degree hiking day and I am so glad I was able to take advantage of it.

So that's about it, I am onto a week of major group projects, class presentations, very big paper to write and beginning the study process for some finals. Fun stuff!!

Do you use a humidifier in the winter?

A few updates and some great hiking views

It's been a few week's since I wrote a Monday post, I am sorry about that. Blogging hasn't been easy for me lately, I just cant seem to find the groove between blogging, school and well how worn out I have been with headaches.

I quick update on the headaches I mentioned. I've been into a specialist twice now. I had a CT scan this past Thursday.
The only good news is the scan ruled out any need for surgery right now.

They are a little baffled by it all, it seems I have all the symptoms of a sinus infection from hell, without the actual symptoms. In other words, I get the headaches and the pressure, but I don't actually have a sinus infection or any type of cold like symptoms that go with it.

Anyhow, we are trying a few new things, to help but it may be something I have to learn to live with for a while and I am having a hard time with that because I am so drained and well it's super hard to concentrate when you have horrible headaches all day. Regardless I am hopeful, so we shall see.

I do try to stay positive on my blog, but I'd be lying to you if I said last week wasn't a rough one for me. However, despite its faults, I had so many other great things happen that it evened out and now I look back on it as little pick me up miracles that I needed to help lift me up and get through the rough patches!

Another positive note: I was about to buy a humidifier to help since it can't really hurt, plus my skin is drying out faster than I can keep up with the lotion and crazy as it is luck was on my side and I am being sent one from Influenster to try out for free. So see even when all seems bad, there are always silver linings!

COLLEGE LIFE

I am keeping up on my studies. I am slipping a little in one class when I didn't do as well on the last exam, but there is an extra credit assignment they put out that will hopefully bump me back up to an A.

Two of my classes are like group project mania, I have had 3 the past few weeks. One of which is a video we are presenting in my class this morning.
It's funny, we picked an environmental theme, and I'm not even an environmentalist, LOL
But it's all good!
If you've followed my blog awhile you may recognize the pictures. I donated all my own photography so we could make the project easier and faster!

HIKING

I did get out last weekend. The weather has been absolutely beautiful here, still feels like summer, so why not get out and do some hiking. If you can't tell I am really loving living near Zion National Park, I don't think I will get bored! Although, I do need to find some local friends who are into backcountry distance hiking because there are a few trails that are 15-20 milers that I REALLY want to do next spring!

Speaking of backcountry hiking, I REALLY want to hike the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim next spring, so I'm just putting it out there in case any of my blogger friends are going to be in the area, reach out to me because I am totally game!!!!

THANKSGIVING

I am looking forward to this short week of school, and going back home to visit all my family and friends for the holiday weekend!
I can't wait, and it looks like it's been snowing up north so maybe I'll even get to go play in the snow or something this weekend!

I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday week, and if any of you are traveling I wish you safe travels as well!!!

RUNNING

Although I've let it slip a little, I have for the most part kept it up through all of the worn out patches. Because I think it helps to stay active.
I've had a few really great runs lately, and I love that as I am dropping some of these pounds, my body is getting stronger and stronger. I haven't bothered increasing the mileage much I keep it between 5-7 a day. But I think after the next 10-pound weight drop which I am working hard on, I am going to try to double my weekly mileage and get back up to around 30-40 a week through the winter. I mean after all what good is living in a town where you can enjoy year round running if you're not out there running!
No races planned, just running for me and my sanity right now!

All the above pictures were taken on my hike last weekend. The scenery is gorgeous, the pictures don't do it justice! It's just a good thing it gets darker and colder in the desert at night because I'd have a hard time ever wanting to leave the trails!

Have a great week everyone!

Tell me something fun you did last week or have planned for the holiday.

Hiking Angles Landing

It's Tuesday and that means Travel Tuesday on my blog. For those of you visiting my blog for the first time in the hop, when I blog on Tuesdays I like to showcase a different part of the country and a place worth seeing!

A few weeks back when I drew my spotlight date for the hop, I decided to save this to share today. Because Angles Landing happens to be one of my most favorite hikes. I can easily say I've done it at least 20 times in my life and I started hiking this with my dad around the age of 10. It's been a favorite since then, even if the hike itself has changed a bit from how it used to be, which I will explain later.

It's quite the hike too, not one for those afraid of heights. In some ways you could also call it quite the climb, so let's begin and I'll take you on a few photo stops along the way of the adventure.

Today, I'll be taking you along the way to the top of the peak in the middle which is called Angels Landing. We'll be climbing about 1,488 feet. The hike itself is about 5 miles round trip. So yes, it's a hike to get your workout on too!

We start out on nicely groomed trails, near the river, before we begin the switchbacks that will make you sweat bullets and will make even those in great shape huff and puff a bit as they feel the burn.
To think when I was a kid I used to be able to run up them, LOL Clearly I am not as in great of shape as then, I stopped a few times to catch my breath LOL

From here we'll begin taking a set of long switchbacks as we climb up to that notch you see in the middle of the above picture. If you look close you can see others on the trail on their way up or down.

I didn't take a lot of pictures of the climb, but as you can see I'm a decent way up from the canyon floor I started at by this point in the hike, you can also get an idea of how steep these switchbacks are by the step, like I said it's a climb and we haven't even gotten to the real climbing yet and it's been full on sun the whole way.

About a mile in now. I've made it up to the notch and now I am heading back into the canyon to take me to the next climb. I've always loved this section because no matter what time of day you hike you'll always get cooler temps and some shade. In fact, I believe it's called Refrigerator Canyon. Which is great to enjoy because it's nearly the last time we'll see shade for a while.

Heading up more switchbacks to get to get higher up and out of Refrigerator Canyon

The famous Walters Wiggles, obviously my photo doesn't do it justice. But here you get 21 steep yet like all the previous trail well-maintained switchbacks.
It's also the fun part for many hikers because at the top is when the awesome part of this hike begins.

At the top of the Wiggles you'll come out to what they call Scout Overlook. It's here you can decide if you have an adventurous side to finish the hike. Or you can split off and head up the West Canyon. Or turn around or watch others make their way up to the top.

I'm going to try and keep the sights you see in order, but before you wonder what is wrong with the coloring. Some I took on the way up, and the majority I took on the way down.
(Coming down was late afternoon.)

Why? That day it was crowded and it would have been rude of me to stop to take a picture while others were waiting behind me to move on.

From the minute you start up the next sections, you have 1000 foot drop-offs on both sides of you, and at times you have not more than a foot or so to walk on with the drop-offs on both sides.
After you make it up the first section, you have a little room to take a break, catch your breath before making it up the steepest and most technical portion of the last fin.

Next, we get to climb down just a little before making our way up the next fin that you can see pictured above.

On weekends and holidays, this popular trail can get crowded, if you are in a hurry you could risk your life or someone else. It's very rude to try to pass others or force them over to a ledge they may not be comfortable on away from a chain to wait for you to pass. So be courteous. I never saw this happen years ago, but because this trail is so popular now I saw it many times happen to others in front of me. Nothing is worth getting down so fast that you risk your life!

I gotta tell you what's changed in the years.

Years back when I used to do this hike in my youth with my dad or even when I was in college (the first time).
The only chains were at the beginning other than a few here or there. There were never chains in this sections as you see above this is all new to me.
I remember because you used to have to be really careful coming down if you jumped not to fall over the edge here. I may or may not of had a few close calls in my youth, LOL

Same with above, there never used to be chains here either. I was talking to my sisters and we guessed they added more because so many people have died on this hike and it's just getting too popular.
If I'm going to be honest, I liked it slightly more before they added all these extra chains, it had more adventure risk to it, now it's lost a little of the risk charm. LOL

Now you just get a steep climb on the way up, and literally unless you're being an idiot or hurrying too fast you can't really fall, because there are chains to grab if you loose your footing or get tired.

It's also made it easier to go up. Before you literally climbed with no assistance.
Now, you can pull yourself up by the chains if your legs aren't strong enough to get you to the top. Or many may even notice you don't need them most of the time but they are there just in case.

So in some ways for those who are okay with heights but aren't good climbers, they've now made this hike more accessible for many different types of hikers.

Not sure when they added all the extra chains, if you've done it and know let me know. Otherwise, I'll have to ask a ranger next time I'm there and find out to satisfy my curiosity.

Yes, they've even added chains to this last big steep climb before the top. You probably won't need them, but I saw a few using them to pull themselves up.
But there are what I'd like to call nature's steps so while it's a climb, it's not that bad if your legs are in good shape. Except I could clearly tell at this point that I am not as young and in shape as I once was. I used to go up this so fast, and I was stopping to let people come down as I took a break to let them pass me many times, and what they didn't know was, I was enjoying that break, my legs were burning, LOL

One of my good friends is coming to town next spring to hike this with me, guarantee I will be sure I am in great shape so she doesn't see me huffing and puffing worse than her, LOL Hey, can't help the little competitor in us all, right!

I didn't mention before, but this is in most sections only room for 1 person. So when you get spots like this you can move over to the side and let those coming down have the right away.
Most hikers are very courteous, and most going up like I was, don't mind a minute break to let someone come down.

On my way up, right here, it was perfect timing to let someone coming down pass by and allow me time to turn around quick and grab a quick shot.

Even though this is a favorite hike, I haven't hiked it for many years until a few weeks ago and it's still every bit as worth it as it was the first time!
This is one of the first views you can get from the top as you make your way across the fin to the highest point and best viewing area.

If your interested and follow me on INSTAGRAM you can flip back a few photos and see a quick panoramic video of the views from the top.

Here (Above Picture) is where I like to plant my butt for a few minutes and enjoy the view, grab a snack and drink before the climb back down!
Isn't it stunning? Seriously there are no boring views from start to finish on this hike, it's all breathtakingly beautiful!

My Instagram feed is about 95% all travel, hiking and outdoors pictures. So if you love beautiful pictures from all over then FOLLOW ME HERE I try to only put up some of my better ones! I also follow back if your account isn't private and blocked!

Have you hiked Angels Landing before?
Is it on your bucket list?
Or are heights and drop offs not your thing?

Five Things I Am Looking Forward To

It's been so long since I have been able to join the 3 fabulous ladies who host the Friday Five Link Up.
I quit blogging Fri-Sun over a year ago to give myself a weekly blogging break. But now moved to a new life, no job just full time college. My schedule has changed, and I am really excited to be able to link up with them again and get to know some of the other bloggers who link up who I haven't met (online) before!

I really wanted to go on their topic, but food and drink is something that currently I have nothing to share on. I'm a returning college student who still hasn't established the best eating habits. Though I am working on it!
To be honest I'd love to be the younger me college student and live off pizza and Pepsi, but if I did that now I'd likely be 200 pounds before the end of the year.

So that left me with the choice on what Friday Five things to share with you all.

Living in the desert again in the location that I do I have a huge list of things I want to do while I am here for the next two years. So I thought I'd share the top 5 on my list with you all. Because just quite possibly they may be things you might want to add to your list if ever visiting Southern Utah too!

1. Hike Angel's Landing.

I've probably done this hike over 25 times in my life and it never gets old. But I have not hiked it in over 10 years. It's not for those afraid of heights, especially since you climb with chains and will be standing at times on a little over two feet wide of rock with 1000 foot drop offs on one side of you, and 800 foot drop offs on the other side of you. But if you don't mind heights, the view from the top is amazing! If you've been on my blog even a few times, you likely know these things are right up my alley!
I'd really like to do this in September or October when the temps cool off and high's aren't in the 100's, but maybe the 90-80's.

2. Hike Zion Narrows.

Again, another I have done dozens of times in my life, but most of those were when I was a child. I actually haven't hiked that beautiful narrow river canyon that shoot up 1000's a feet above me in over 15 years. I definitely plan to do this, during a non-flash flood risk day in October!
The pic below isn't the narrows, but a view I took a few weeks ago just before you get to them.

3. Cliff Diving at Sand Hollow.

Truth be told, I will be there this weekend, but not to cliff dive. To watch my sister swim a mile in the lake and finish the rest of her Olympic Triathlon and I think she may have a fabulous chance of winning over all. She's put in some killer training!
I'd like to go back to swim in the waters preferably with some family or friends and jump the 30-50 foot cliff dive jump options. I was sick back in June and only watched my sister and nephew do them, (that's my sis jumping below) so it's my turn this fall! I'm hoping in October when my sister brings the paddleboards we can park them at the side and climb up for the dive!

4. Run all the trails in the area I live in.

Now this will likely take me the full two years to do them all. As I have been told there are hundred's of miles of trails in the area, and about half of them are even paved through the beautiful desert. I've already hit up a few of them already! This city/county has spared no expense when it comes to giving runners/walkers lots of places to go!

5. Run the St. George Marathon.

I've already done this one six times, it's one of my favorites in the entire country. I actually got into the lottery this year. But with moving and getting ready to go on this new college adventure so quickly. My training lacked and even I am big enough to admit I am not ready as I mentioned last week I will not be running it next month. But next year, I think I can score a guaranteed entry and there will be very little that can hold me back for sure!

If you want to visually follow me on these adventures, make sure you follow My Instagram page, as I am really active on there with travel/hiking and different location scenery posts from my days.

So tell me, what is something you have on your list of things to do before the year ends?

Yay I'm Back, Moved and College is Going Great

Yay, I am exited to be back. It took me a bit longer to get Internet service hooked up at my new place.

I couldn't blog from my cell phone, because the area I live in now is a little out of full service range. It was taking 2-3 minutes to pull up a web page, because of that yeah I didn't even bother going online for much of anything.

MOVING

My move went pretty good. My fabulous parents came with me to help me so I could bring more than would just fit into my own car. They are awesome by the way. They stuck around a few days and helped me get moved in and settled.

I mentioned a few weeks back I was moving into an apartment sight unseen.
Fortunately, it all worked out fabulously. The place is much larger than I expected. Its also newer and kept up quite well. The views I have in my desert surroundings are fabulous.
I live on the side of a plateau and have some stunning views out all my windows. I'm also located within minutes of some of the most beautiful places you've ever seen. In short, I am very happy about it.

I've already been enjoying playing in my new backyard as you can see in the image above and below. Since it was National Parks 100 year anniversary and it was free to get into them. I couldn't resist a bit of hiking in Zion Nation Park. No matter how many times I go there, I am always in love with the beauty of it. I even love more how close I live to it again and can visit and enjoy it anytime I want!

BACK TO SCHOOL

In my mind I thought the first week teachers would ease into it all a bit.
I was wrong, very wrong. I literally had so much homework and reading after the first couple of days, I was beyond looking forward to the weekend!

One plus is I really do like my classes. Granted two of them are pretty much nothing new to me, having been working in the Recreation industry in the past. But it might be nice to have a couple of easier classes because the other two I am taking are going to be much more involved than I had anticipated.

MY EEKK MOMENT OF THE WEEK

Leave it to me in an open conversational debate on my 2nd day of class to be the one who had the question in relation to the reading assignment and my disagreement with it. Which put all attention on me as the two professor's (it felt like) grilled me on several responses in front of the entire class, before taking the question to the rest of the class.

Thankfully I have an opinion on everything so that kind of helped. But it did feel awkward at first, but seeing as how once a week we will be doing that, I'll get used to it. (I think)
Bonus, whenever you say anything profound, LOL you get extra points and I scored a lot of extra points that day they said, LOL

Campus life is significantly different than it was when I went to school here many years ago. Besides the fact that the University campus has changed a lot. Everything is different.

I just loved being the only one who didn't know we were all supposed to be using this online portal, it's like a Facebook for school (Canvas) and all my assignments and schedules are on there. Ha ha.

One new thing I do love is this book rental stuff. I was able to get all books for all 4 classes for $127. Sweet huh! I lucked out because one class the professor's (yeah I have a triple teacher class) hate books because they are ridiculously expensive. So one less book to buy there yay me!

The rest of college life is great. I am not the oldest in my classes, well in one of them I definitely am. But I think not looking my age helps a bit as oddly there are kids that come up and talk to me like I am one of their peers and I haven't seen them do that to some of the other older individuals in the class. Which is funny, but I have decided to play the obviously I'm a bit older than you. But no one needs to know how much, LOL.

RUNNING

I made a decision, or my lack of being able to get out and do long runs has made the decision. The marathon I signed up for which is about a month away. I am not going to be ready for it.

With the move and everything happening in my life, I had to skip the last 4 weeks of building mileage longer run days. I'm only running about 20 miles a week right now and that is nowhere near the 40 I should be at to be getting my body properly conditioned.

Plus, I am struggling. I've really got to dump some of this weight I think it's holding me back from being able to run as I would like.

It kinda sucks, because it's going to kill me to pass up on the race. The Marathon is actually and ironically in the new town I just moved to. (Didn't plan that when I signed up for it back in April!)
But when you're not ready, you're not ready. I am going to continue to train and begin the building process, but without a specific goal in mind. Other than getting my body back in shape, and boy does it need it!

I do however have many beautiful trails all around me. I think I could run a different trail every day for a month and not have to do the same one if I wanted to. This city has put a lot of money into making these gorgeous trails.

It is funny though, I can't tell you how many lizards I now have to watch dart out of my way. One was so big on the trail the other day I was sure I was going to accidentally step on his head when I didn't notice him in time, but he moved quicker than he looked like he could, LOL

I fully plan on getting back into blogging regularly starting this week. But I am going to ease into it a little and start with two posts a this week instead of 3-4. Just so I can ease into things and fit it into my new schedule and not get overwhelmed.

So tell me, what is something you've done lately that has put you out of your comfort zone?

I am linking up with HoHo Runs and MissSippiPiddlin today for their Weekly Wrap!
