Book Review LAST LIGHT by Terri Blackstock

Ever wondered what it would be like if the power went out?  Not just the power, but anything and everything that runs on power, cars, planes, sewer, water, all electronic devices.  In Last Light by New York Times Best Selling Author Terri Blackstock you get that question answered and a whole lot more.

With no warning, Birmingham, Alabama and the rest of the world has lost all power. Planes crash to the ground mid-flight.  Cars stop and litter the streets and freeways.  All communications, phones, computers, radio's, generators are completely useless.  Each home becomes nothing more than a shelter or storage for the families in them.
The story follows the Branning family, Doug and his wife Kay.  Their children Dani, Jeff, Logan and Beth.  Quickly the Branning's realize they only have themselves to count on as it only takes minutes before some people around the city start going crazy.  Robbing and attacking others just to get bicycles or other items they may need to get to where they want to go.
It only takes minutes walking home from deserted cars on the highway before a one realizes they should have taken better care of their health and stayed in shape.  As a fifteen to twenty minute car ride, can turn into a couple of hours on foot of walking.

Each day as it becomes more and more evident that the power isn't going to come back on any time soon, if ever at all.  Families and individuals are forced into survival mode.  The only problem is, not each person is equip to handle a life without power.  The Branning family decides, that they are going to have to stay together and work together to survive.
Simple things like getting water, turn into hours of carrying it from lakes to be boiled for drinking.  Food without refrigeration quickly rots, and basic skills that most don't have like hunting and fishing become a necessity.

When the Brannings neighbor is attacked by an unknown thief and murderer.  This puts them into sleepless nights taking turn guarding their family with the few weapons they have.  They begin hording all their possessions so they will have more to last them longer.  But one night this Christian family realizes they may be looking at this entire situation wrong.  So on a leap of faith they reach out to begin helping others.  Sharing weapons, supplies with those in need.
The elderly become the most resourceful for information as they teach and help those with how things used to be done back in a time when not everyone had all the luxuries of power and electricity.  A community comes together, even though they have a killer among them that has each neighbor questioning who it is, and if they will be the killers next target.

Terry Blackstock has carved a beautiful novel in Last Light of survival.  He really makes you think about your own life, and what you would do.  Full of suspense, and very likable characters, you are able to go on a journey with them as the lights go out.  I loved this book, it was a great page turner for me!  I cannot wait to read the next in the series Night Light, True Light and Dawn's Light.  What's even better, is that they are all out in print and I can go pick up the next and continue the story.  If you love a great story, with a deeper meaning behind it, you'll love Last Light by Terri Blackstock.
