The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the 72 steps leading up towards it became famous from the ROCKY movies, as he ran up the steps to the "Gonna Fly Now" song.
When I did it, I of course had to run up the steps and then give my best "Rocky" pose and flex those arm muscles for my picture!
I should have wore headphones and ran to the song, but I didn't:)
Then when you're done, go get your photo taken with the bronzed Rocky Statue!
Would I travel all the way to Philly just to run up the steps? Probably not, but when I went there to run the Philadelphia Marathon, which is an awesome race!
The race actually begins and ends right near the famous steps. When I did it, they were of course playing the Rocky themed music as you passed the area!
I know you hear the tune in just about every single marathon out there, someone plays it. But this was the one time, that I was like, right on, let it play!!!
Of course, no I didn't run up them that morning before the race:) Which might have been less tiring. I decided to wait until after the race, get cleaned up and stop by and run up them before I went to dinner.
Where my legs tired? I just ran 26.2 of course they were! But that is no reason to be lazy, besides a little walking and running the evening after a marathon helps you recover faster!
If you go, I'd suggest bringing a friend to take your picture! This time, I brought my fabulous mom. Even she couldn't resist running up the steps, posing for a photo too, awesome!
(Sorry the picture quality on these was terrible!)

Have you run the famous "Rocky" steps?
If you find yourself in Philly, will you take the quick side trip to do it?
Have you run the Philadelphia Marathon? Did you love it?
So get this, the first time that I ran up the Rocky steps was in heels during a Bachelorette party. The bride really wanted pictures of us at the top of the steps, and then we had to take another picture with the Rocky statue. With me running/walking RnR Philly in a week and a half, I'll have to take some more Rocky inspired pictures then.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of doing the Rock and Roll Half in Philadelphia next year and I have to admit that running up the Rocky steps and posing for a photo are part of the draw :)
ReplyDeleteI have not been to Philly at all. I drove through Pittsburg but my trips to PA were to other towns to visit family.
ReplyDeleteHeels, that is awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteI forgot RnR has a race there too, yes definitely you will have to run them again.
I haven't run that one, but did do the Philadelphia Marathon they host in November and it was awesome. It's a pretty city, lots of history even though I haven't ran RnR course, I think you'll enjoy the race if you do it next year! When you do, definitely pose for the photo and run up those stairs, :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a big state, lots to see and do. I've not been up near Pitsburg, but the southern sections of the state, Gettysburg, Lancaster, Philly are just beautiful so much history and things to see!
ReplyDeleteI must do this! I listen to Rocky at every race as my kickoff song!
ReplyDeleteDarnit! I'll be going to Philly (well, not quite Philly, but kindasorta close to it?) on Monday for the other super-lovely (hah) part of my boards licensing exam for med school...but thankfully, it should be the last of the ones I have to take for medical school (hoorayyy!)! I'm flying to NC the next day, but if I can manage to squeeze it in, I'll try to get up there! :]
ReplyDeleteDefinitely!!! If I lived near there, it would be an end of training run must, LOL
ReplyDeleteAwe yes, the awesome song! I bet it's in 99% of us runners playlists:) You definitely must do it someday!
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome about the last exam:) Definite Wahooo!!! Oh ya, if you can you should totally do it. Even if you're taking a taxi if it's not much out of the way, I would tell the cabbie to wait on the road in front of the steps and go run up them and pose, LOL You might make his/her day:) LOL
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! If you're ever in Philly besides all the historical sites, this is a must do for a runner!
ReplyDeleteI love running up the Rocky steps! something about it just makes you feel bad ass right?
ReplyDeleteI have been to Philly but didn't go to the Rocky steps, I can't believe that! We have friends up there, so next time we go I will make sure I do that!
ReplyDeleteLove the Rocky steps! Whenever we have guests from out of town we take them there and we all run up and of course take an obligatory photo. :) I haven't done the full marathon, but I did the half and it was a great race! One of my favorites here on the east coast!
ReplyDeleteI'm running the Philadelphia Half next month and the Rocky steps are a top priority!
ReplyDeleteOh ya, next time you visit them, add this to your list:)
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome!
ReplyDeleteThat's great, ya I was surprised when I ran it, I wasn't expecting to much just a big city race, but I loved it, and the course goes through some very pretty areas!
That is awesome! I haven't done the half, but completely enjoyed the full! They really do make it a great time, just like they advertise, LOL Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI am headed for Philly tomorrow for the first time! This is definately on my must do list!
ReplyDeleteOh yay, you will love Phily especially if you enjoy historical sites:) Hope you get to do it, and take a camera, it's just a fun thing to say you did!
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how everyone calls them the Rocky steps here in your comments. If you're from Philly, they are the Art Museum steps. And, yes, it's a bucket list item for visitors. I usually walk up them and take a video of my friends or family running up.
ReplyDeleteI remember the controversy when the statue was first made. They (whoever "they" was) wanted the statue at the very top of the steps, but the Museum would not allow it. So the statue resided on South Street for a couple decades. Then, someone made a special place for the statue at the bottom of the steps for photo ops (for those who couldn't do the steps, probably). Philly does love its Rocky, though. And now that song is running through my head. Haha!
That's funny!
ReplyDeleteI don't blame them for not wanting the statue at the top of the steps.
When I ran the Philly Marathon, I assumed they'd play the famous song that goes with it. As we hit the half way point we ran right past the steps and they had it playing on repeat. I knew right then, I was coming back later that night to run up the steps and get the picture taken, LOL
